I hate student health

The nurse practioner promised to call me first thing when she got in this morning at 9. She has both my home and cell numbers. It is now 11:15. I have not yet heard from her.

My roommate's not answering the phone, she's probably still sleeping, so I can't tell if they called my apartment. Even though I specifically told them to call my cell.

They get REALLY pissy when you call them to find out your test results. But it's at the point where i'm PISSED b/c i'm not getting treated.

I still feel fine, except i'm having a very difficult time swallowing and my neck's a little stiff. Thank god i'm not on my death bed, having to rely on them. I'm half tempted to drive home later and go to my PCP.

ARGH this is NOT the time of year to mess with me!

I'm glad you don't have mono. Cause while I'm an advocate of there's a drug for just about all that ails ya; there's NOTHING for mono.

I had mono my last year in college. It was end of Winter quarter. I had ZERO appetite, just thinking of food made me sick. I was really tired and my throat hurt but I chocked it up to me studing so much for finals.

So after I took my last final I went to Student Health. They took a throat culture and blood and said it's probably mono cause it had been going around. I was expecting to be told I had an ear infection or something! I told the nurse if I have a mono and I failed my finals I may need a note to try to retake them. The bloodwork wouldn't be back till morning so I had to come back the next day. I was annoyed cause for once my finals ended early in the week and now I had to still come back to school just to get my results.

I came back the next day and the test was negative but the nurse was convinced it was mono. She took more blood and gave me a bunch of gatorade to drink. She said to make sure and rest and don't drink any alcohol.

Here's the kicker, I was leaving for Spring Break in Vegas the next day!!!!!!!!

Since the test was negative I partied my ass off.

Course that was stupid and the moment I got home I felt like I was going to die. I slept so much when I got back. I'd wake up only to check out what color my tonsils were and if they were still bleeding/pussy. GROSS I know. They're scarred now.

After Spring Break it was back to school. And back to Student Health. The test was still negative so the nurse took even more blood and gave me even more gatorade! Few days later the test was finally positive but I was feeling sooo much better by then!

Good news is though, I passed my finals!

I've never had it. I've been really tired these past 2 weeks, so just by reading this thread , I was convinced that I had it.

Went to the doctor today. I don't have mono. I have a nice ear infection. And had I not screwed around all day yesterday, I could have gotten my prescription filled. But that's life and so my ear will hurt another day till I can get my drugs.

To whomever stated that you can get mono twice, you cannot. However, if your immune system is compromised (usually from another illness) you can relapse, it's not getting it "again" it is simply just a recurrance of symptoms.

Sorry, but I think you missunderstood your doc...

What's to misunderstand when you hear "your results tested positive for mono" when you just had mono some months back?

Unless my doctor made the mistake. Who knows?

Are there by any chance any doctors out there who can clear up the whole "you can/can't get it again" debate? Because I know people who have had it several times and were not immune compromised, plus I've always been told that once you get it you're more susceptible to getting it again and again.

I myself have never had it (at least not that I know of ) but my school's student health office sure did test everybody for it (and strep as well) who walked in the door! It got to the point where I would ask them NOT to test me!

Okay... just went to medinenet.com (because I'm so curious) which states that the chances of getting it again are slim to none. The reason people get diagnosed multiple times is this: The virus can stay in your blood for a very long time after you get over your "first" infection. You may begin experiencing symptoms similar to those of mono, so of course when you go to the doctor they test you for it. The test is positive because the virus is still present in your blood, so you get a second diagnosis. The thing is, you usually don't actually have mono at this point. Does that make sense?

So I guess that's where the myth that you're more likely to get it again comes from.

BTW... I also found that white people are 30 times more likely to get mono than any other race. I know someone had a question about that.

i got mono the summer before my senior year of college. sucked big ole donkey balls. i was such a huge alcoholic then that i practically went through withdrawl. i still went to the bar, i just didn't drink. and i still hooked up with guys, just didn't kiss them.
see this is the time that i was hanging out with the bar staff and didn't really even go out til 3am when they all got off work. hated being sick. i did have to rest almost all the time if i wanted to go out at night. once classes started i had to give up the bars almost completely in order to go to class.
honestly though, i've been way worse sickness wise. two days after my graduation i was in the hospital with a temp of 104, couldn't swallow or speak at all. i was dehydrated and delusional. they had to hook me up to an iv, shoot me up with steriods and an antibiotic. (steriod to help my body's nature defenses fight off the virus and antibiotics to kick out any bacterial infection present).
thank God i got better within a few days cuz i was leaving for mexico two days after the hospital.
oh by the way, never go tanning when you have that kind of fever.

oh, one more thing. Epstine Bar is something that is terminal. it's also different than chronic fatigue syndrome.
a man i know has it and can't do anything. in his bad times he can't even get out of bed to go to the bathroom. he has one of the worst reported cases in the state of pennsylvania.
someone else can verify what causes it, but i'm pretty sure it's more on the side of genetic. i could be wrong though. also, there is no treatment for it.

ps - oh yeah, mono does affect the spleen very much so. that's one of the main reasons you shouldn't drink alcohol when you have mono. also, your body can't heal itself as well when you have alcohol in your system. that's why they say don't drink when taking antibiotics. it negates the effects of the antibiotics in your system. also the reason they tell you to sleep so much when you have mono is b/c your immune system is much more active when you are asleep.

Nope never had mono....

If I did, I probably wouldn't realize it. I hardly ever get sick, and I never even had the flu until I was 22. Even then my dad had to tell me. I thought it was just a cold.

Mono

Dani- glad to hear you don't have it, but I wanted to add my story.
After fall semester my freshman year my mom and I went bra shopping. I went into a fitting room and couldn't reach my arms around to hook the hooks and my mom had to do it for me. My arms and legs ached so much. When we got home she called the dr who said that it sounded like a flu that was going around, so I went with it. When I went back to school I was tired and had really big bags under my eyes. My throat was killing me and every part of my body hurt. I went to the health care center and they tested me for strep and mono. The strep came back positive and the PA said that if my tonsils didn't shrink I was going to suffocate because I couldn't breath through my nose or mouth. I went back to the dorm really upset and told my roommate what was up. The mono test wasn't supposed to come in for a few days though. She went and told the head RA of the dorm that I had mono and the head RA came and told me I would have to leave. I told him the results weren't in and I would let him know as soon as I did. I went back a few days later and they said that the test showed that I had mono but to rest and come back a few days later. I went back a few days later and that test showed that I was at the end of the mono. They think I had it for a few months but was already on the back end of it. I let my roommate know as soon as I got home and never spoke to her again. My tonsils were never the same after that. Before that I had strep maybe 5 times my whole life. After the mono I had tonsilitis every 3 weeks. It got so frustrating that my Junior year I had my tonsils taken out. My spleen was never enlarged though. For years after that if I didn't take care of myself I would get really tired for weeks. Even now in law school I feel like it creeps up on me again.
That's my story.
Sorry it's long.

I got mono the week before finals last year. I thought I had strep; I had been feeling pretty sick for a couple weeks but just put off going to our health center because they are horrible. I woke up on a saturday barely able to move or speak. I walked to the health center in my pajamas, was told that I had tonsilitis, and probably mono. My strep test had come back negative, and since mono takes at least a week to appear in your bloodstream, they gave me a ton of vicadon and told me to come back in a week. Helpful.....riiiight. So basically I couldn't move or function-I was tired ALL the time and pretty much just slept. You often have something that accompanies mono-like strep of tonisilitis. Mine got to the point where I was coughing up blood, (sorry) I went to the hospital and they gave me a mono test which came back positive. I requested a steroid shot to liven me up a bit so I could make it through finals. They refused; my mom kidnapped from my dorm and made me come home to rest so I ended up having to take my finals over the summer and I never got to say good-bye to all the dorm friends! I still have no idea how I got it, the guy who I was dating at the time didnt get it. Hope you dont have it~it can be a MAJOR pain!!!
