Yes, there is an Indiana University of Pa (IUP). It's located in Indiana, PA. It's also the hometown of Jimmy Stewart!!

Yes...IUP has been making an effort to be "IUP" (kinda like Kentucky Fried Chicken is "KFC"). That isn't the one I'm talking about though...there's a Uni of Indiana that is basically a diploma mill.

In the Oklahoma City metro area there are two major schools which are often confused..
Don't forget Oklahoma Christian University (OC) people get that one confused with OCU also.

Agreed. Where I'm from the UW is the University of Wisconsin, but in other parts of the US it'd be assumed that it was the University of Washington.

Your perception of which school the initials refer to is definitely contingent on where you're from, generally on how close you live to the university in question (i.e., in Madison the UW will always refer to Wisconsin and not Washington, U of M is almost always Minnesota and not Michigan, USC is Southern Carolina and not Southern California) or how familiar you are with the school (I have a friend who goes to Oklahoma State, therefore OSU always means Oklahoma State and not Ohio State). And then there are the rare instances in which schools have almost identical names -- my ex boyfriend went to Cornell University, in New York, but one of my friends goes to Cornell College, in Iowa.

Anyway, clarification is always appreciated.

And what about those of us who went to private schools whose names don't indicate their location? I mean, sure, I think we all have a pretty good idea what and where Harvard is, but if I say I went to CWRU, should I spell it out, specify that it's in Cleveland, OH, or what?

And there are about a million St. Mary's, there are a couple of Notre Dames ...
