I tell ya, SOME Black people just don't know how to act. What was the NEED for all of that mess between Snoop and Suge? You see, this is why I don't USUALLY watch the black awards shows. We can't do NOTHING without SOMEBODY messing it up. But I guess that THIS show was okay. Gosh, hearing those old EWF songs makes me want to go out and by their "Best of EWF" CD.

The more I see BET, and the more I hear of the fiascos it puts out, the more I am convinced that it is more of a liability to the advancement of the people it professes to "entertain".

Not at all surprising. Bob Johnson, BET's founder, has said that his goal is to run a profit maximization business, period. He has always stressed that he is a capitalist, not a social service provider. And if BET puts out lowbrow entertainment, so be it.

When he came on the stage, he had this look on his face like "Dayum! I don't want to be here!"...Maybe he's in it for the almighy dollar but I gather he's not proud of his work...
Overall, the show was much better than last year (Whitney's Fiasco). Usher's performance was tight--he's really talented and I love seeing him perform (He's good live too). Luda was the BOMB! I was getting my groove on (dancing--not that other kind of grooving ) in my bedroom!
Both of Free's outfits look like she bought them from the $1 store to wear out hooking on Sunset Blvd. She always dresses ugly. Mary dresses liek she shops at the swapmeet almost everytime I see her (minus some of her videos, when as someone else mentioned, she looks nice). I think at awards events she lets her 3 yr.old lil cousin pick out her fits. She needs a good stylist--and good friends to tell her azz that she "be lookin' ghe-tto!"
EWF was the bomb too! How come I'm only 21 but I knew ALL of those songs, and others! That's how you know you grew up in a black family! I love the oldies. I listen to the oldies radio station where I live and even sometimes to the digital cable oldies music channel!
Muhammed Ali had me cracking up! He told it like it is!
And, India Arie was being dramatic about her award. "I'm not used to this [receiving awards at awards shows]...I can't think right now..." I kind of think she should be insulted, b/c it seems like BET was giving out pity awards--not to say that the artisits did not deserve them, but their motives for giving awards to certain people--Will Smith for "Ali"; India Arie, etc.--seemed suspect. But I am glad that she has gottem some recognition. She plays 7 instruments! Gone on girl!
Lastly, anywhere Suge Knight goes, trouble follows. He has issues, anyway. How are you going to be a blood and have crips on your record label? I'm glad Snoop did not partake in the foolishness, yet didn't "go out like a punk" either. Suge's just mad that he doesn't have anyone on his label anymore. Can you say "Hater"!

maybe Im wrong, but I thought the reason he couldnt hit those notes was because he was not the original person to sing that part. i thought that Maurice White was the original artist on that tune?

No I think he was the person to sing that part, I know Maurice White was the lead on Let's Grove Tonight.

I don't know if Philip Bailey was the first to sing "Reasons", I do know he is the one that sings it in the concert version everybody knows ( you know the one where he goes back and forth against the sax player?) I thought the they may have missed a cue because the song seemed like it was going to fast and maybe he didn't get a chance to catch his breath.

Phillip Bailey IS one of the original singers for EWF. Maurice White started the band and sang as lead singer until.... But Phil was always the one singing the parts with the high notes. Plain and simple, Phil is no longer a spring chicken. His voice (as well as Maurice's and a lot of other "old schoolers") is not what it used to be. That comes with the territory. But the performance the other night was wonderful. I was wondering where all of the other band members are? EWF was a very BIG band. They had it all...horns, precussions, bass, etc. They didn't use any modern-day stuff like they do now. That's what made them (along with a lot of other bands like The Commadores, Kunfunction, Franky Beverly and MAZE, etc.) so unique.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. Luda did not get to follow that trend. And I really don't sweat him just because he's repping home (Banneker C/O '95...what?). I think he's an excellent lyricist just because he is one of the best at playing with words.
That's unfortunate that all of that went down with Suge. Then again, drama follows him everywhere. If I was in the audience, I would have been one of the folks walking away, too. I knew something had happened b/c you could see several people walking around which is a no-no for awards shows. Basically, we can tell that they're not aiming to be the Essence Awards or the NAACP Image awards. More performing than anything. Bless 'em all.

BET Awards
I did see the awards and for the life of me I can't understand why it lasted so long. They did that last year. 2 hours is enough!!!Free always looks a mess. I don't see why someone can't help her get dressed better. I think Nelly is the finest man I have seen in a while,so of course I think he did good!!But what is up with Cash Money??Lil Wayne has a new CD called 500 degrees and all they kept saying is 500 not 400, like Juvenile's album!!
Was it just me, or were you surprised that Laila Ali didn't say anything about her Dad when she got her award??
Mary just needs to get it together. Sometimes she dresses okay but others..I don't what she's thinking. But at least her hair didn't look like a mop like it does on those BET commercials and that video she has.
All I have to say is Black Folks,we need to get it together.

I KNOW I'm late...
IMO, I think the show was better than last year.
I saw the post-show (BET tonight/News). Ed Gordon interviewd India.Arie. She mentioned the fact that she was a little perplexed when she had accepted her award, because of "Suge". I was like , I missed that part. I'm glad you all put that information up as to what happened.
Jill was also interviewed. She commented on the fact that it was a great experience to be on stage with Yolanda, etc. doing their tribute to Ali. She said it was really good to be with those who could SANG and didn't complain that they could not be heard. LOL. I do not know if you all noticed but when the show was ending and the credits were rolling, Alicia Keys was missing. Angie, Jill, and Yolanda were still on stage singing. Could she hang?

Yall got me rolling . I pretty much enjoyed the show, especially Chaka Khan, though she was a bit hoarse from all that touring she's doing.
I love EW&F, went to see them and Chaka last September.
I have to agree, why in the world does Mary have to act a fool when she sing these days? I get nervous whenever she sings "No More Drama." Whew, she goes crazy.
Who does Usher think he is? I tell ya, he makes me wanna bang my head against a wall whenever I see him perform or on video. Nerve wrecking I tell ya.
Gerald Levert and Tweet performed well. As a matter of fact, believe it or not, you can put Tweet's album on from #1 and let it play all the way through.
JaRule - Thats my dawg, but dang, I felt like the show was a tribute to him.
Janet - I swear I'm gonna marry that woman
Jill Scott - Love her to death, but she looked like a starnated fool (ole country term)
India Arie - I'm glad they gave her the award. I wish she would have performed.
Steve and Ced - Hilarious
Lalah Ali - one word...GHETTO! I love it. Sounds like she's straight out of Detroit.

Did you guys notice that with all of her stomping and jumping around, she had to place her right tit back into her bra cup...MORE THAN TWICE!!! For the LIFE of me, I can't understand why she wears such nice outfits in her videos, but on the awards shows, she's like totally busted. I just don't get it.
Why is JaRule (and I really like him too) acting like he's as drunk as a skunk? "Cut the check"? What's up with THAT?
Why is Puffy looking like he just came off of the farm? I realize that his outfit may cost more than a month's pay for me, but with all of his money (and the SeanJohn collections) why is he dressing like that?
And tell me why did New Edition get up there trying to solicit their new album and tour, ESPECIALLY BEFORE announcing who the winner of that category was? They're totally BOOTY!!!
Gosh, I love Angie Stone (she's also from S.C.), but does she look like the type to be with D'Angelo? Well, it really doesn't matter, does it because she WAS with him and she has his son, right?
Yall I don't care what Jill Scott wears, how her hair is done, or what she sings, JILL IS MY GURRRL!!!!! But in all honesty, that outfit just does not do her ANY justice.
I tell ya. Most of the time I actually DRED watching the awards shows for Black people because something usually happens or someone usually acts like a fool. Luckily, ony ESSENCE has been able to avoid most of that for their award show.
I'll be back with more comments later.

Now, reading all these posts, I think I will have to catch the repeat of this show. See, you made me curious like that.

Earlier, someone mentioned about Laila Ali not thanking her father. This evening I saw Bryant Gumbel's show on HBO. There was a piece on Ali. Ali isn't too enthused that his daughter is boxing. He doesn't really like it at all. He said that women were not made for boxing, they were not meant to be hit in their face and their breasts. (paraphrasing)
Maybe this is why she didn't thank him, per se. I guess she could have mentioned him as "Dad"...
Oh, and Tweet. She did well with Gerald Levert. I may have to purchase the CD. She does have some "pipes" on her.
