Talking What was your favorite opening sequence?

My favorite opening sequence was probaby the tropical island theme

I LOVED the episode when they acted out Rudy's story!
Least favorite episode, when Cliff had a dream and the Muppets starred

I was a little older than Rudy so I couldn't stand it when Olivia came and took over Rudy's place as the cute one in the family.

A Different World wasn't even worth watching until Denise left l

Theo's picture: Still tucked into my socks

Whitney chats Wednesdays at 1 p.m. ET. Submit questions now

Enter the delicious archive

Nothing comes between me and Gordon Gartrelle.

For the past three nights, I have sacrificed sleep, regular meals and the triumphant return of Once & Again to watch reruns of The Cosby Show on Nick at Nite. Why would I knowingly do such a thing?

Two words: Theo Huxtable.

Sure, I once copied Denise's make-up techniques. I envied Rudy's dimples. I was even fascinated by Vanessa's bizarre mushroom haircut near the end of the series' run. But I spent most of the '80s nurturing an unhealthy fixation on Theo, only son of Cliff and Clair, played by the lovable Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

It didn't take long to get me hooked. The show's pilot episode gave viewers a peek into Theo's world, which included a report card littered with D's and the largest bedroom in America. Numerous adventures followed, including the time Theo came home with a pierced ear and the year he was chosen to carve the Thanksgiving turkey (and deliver a dreadful Julia Child impression). Despite his bad grades and clownish behavior, Theo seemed to have it all.

The fifth episode of The Cosby Show — a Theo showcase, of course — still stands as my favorite 30 minutes in sitcom history. In "A Shirt Story," Dr. Huxtable forces Theo to return a $95 Gordon Gartrelle designer shirt. Loopy Denise swears she can sew one just like it for a fraction of the price, and, of course, the result is hilariously disastrous. When Denise suggests Theo tuck in the misshapen shirt to improve its look, he insists, "It's tucked into my socks!"

I know it sounds nutty, but I've watched hours of Nickelodeon's Cosby Show marathon in hopes of seeing "A Shirt Story" one more time. I loved the episode so much, in fact, that I once recorded it. The tape quickly became a favorite in my freshman dormitory, where, unfortunately, someone decided to steal it. Figures.

And, speaking of crime, even the serious, moral-heavy Theo episodes are worth repeated viewings. Most people remember when a joint fell out out Theo's textbook, a storyline which ranks right up there with the time Cherry got trapped in a refrigerator on Punky Brewster. And who can forget Theo's dyslexia? Silver Spoons may have handled it better — after all, they got Bruce Jenner to guest star — but The Cosby Show maintained the plot point to the very end of the series.

The more I watched Theo, the more I yearned for a best friend named Cockroach and someone to sing the "Justine, Justine!" song to me. But sadly, as the seasons wore on (The Cosby Show ran from 1984-92), Cockroach disappeared and was replaced by forgettable sidekicks (including a guy named Smitty, played by a young Adam Sandler). Theo went to graduate school, grew some facial hair and became a teacher. As Theo's antics faded, I was forced to turn my obsession to the cast of thirtysomething.

Nevertheless, most episodes of The Cosby Show have retained their hilarity, and I'm glad to see them back on the air. (I awoke my spouse the other night after laughing too hard during the funeral for Rudy's goldfish, Lamont.) When desperate for an anecdote at a family function, I advise passing a Theo story off as your own. To this day, some of my relatives may still believe I wrote the "Shakespeare Rap."

Some may say it's too soon to add the series to Nick at Nite's lineup, but I say it happened just at the right time. Family sitcoms no longer rule prime time, and the ones that do could learn some lessons from the Huxtables. The Cosby Show combined just enough fantasy with reality and featured a fabulous cast.

So where is the cast now? Well, Lisa Bonet still loves the eyeliner; she appeared in High Fidelity a couple years ago. Keshia Knight Pulliam graduated from college last year. Tempestt Bledsoe appeared on Politically Incorrect last week. Sabrina Le Beauf — she played Sondra, in case you've forgotten — is now an interior designer. And my Malcolm-Jamal is co-starring with Luke Perry in a new Showtime series.

As for Theo's whereabouts, I'd like to think he's now married to Justine, living in a big, Huxtable-size home and forbidding his kids to pierce their ears.

Without a doubt, I'm sure he a few Gordon Gartrelles in his closet, too.

Cool My faves

Favorite Cosby Kid: without a doubt, it had to be Theo! Theo was a straight fool. He kept me in tears. And the fool must have had a tape worm the way he and Cockroach used to eat (remember how much he loved the "Bacon Burger Dog"?). Plus I loved how he would always get caught up in his lies about something or another (like when they put him on trial for lying about the track team incident).

Favorite Non-Cosby Kid: This is a tight category, but Imma have to go with Kenny, bka BUD. He was straight jokes. And he didn't say "My Brother says", it was "My BRUHVA says". I liked him best when he was young and cute (I liked Rudi best when she was young and cute TOO...you know I gotta give a soror a shout out - SMILE). And of course I loved the oh so sexy LANCE. He's a hottie.

Favorite Episode: I want to say that my favorite episode is an earlier one, when Denise brings her boyfriend, played by Kristoff St. John (Neil from Young and the Restless, but he had a big ol' jheri curl of some sort) home for dinner. He had on the mismatched socks, and was going off on Cliff and Claire about their jobs and incomes and such. And he said, "Oh, I don't believe in grades", and Theo was like, ALRIGHT!! That would have to be the alltime jokiest to me.

Another episode my sisters and I LOVE is when Rudi's friend sleeps over - she's played by this little white girl who also played the daughter in 'Beaches'. In the episode, the little girl wakes Cliff up in the middle of the night saying she hates Rudi and wants him to take her home right now. But by the time Cliff wakes up and goes to get her, she's back in the bed sleeping and says, "I love Rudi - she's my best friend." That just cracks me and my sisters up every time for some reason.

OOOWEEE, I loved "The Lipsticks" - when Vanessa and her girls formed the group singing "The Locomotion". BOY OH BOY were their voices TERRIBLE!!! And those outfits...phew!

Least favorite episode: The later episodes were wack. I wasn't too keen on "Winnie and Nelson", those non-acting Huxtable grandkids. And altho I liked the first "anniversary song" episode, the ones to follow just didn't live up to the first "Nighttime is the Right time" song. The only good thing about the finale was the fact that Cliff wore A TUSKEGEE SWEATSHIRT (don't hate).

I also tripped off of how at first, they had 4 kids and then this 5th kid pops up. I'm still trying to figure out how old Cliff and Claire are, and how they managed law school, med school + residency, and 5 kids all at practically the same time. But then again, on Happy Days and Family Matters, they started out with more kids and ended up with less (remember Richie's big brother who played basketball, and Eddie & Laura's little sister with all the ponytails?). So that's television I guess.

Thank you thank you VEDDY much

DOES anyone know what happened to Peter?!?!!?!?

Cosby Philosophy: ALICIA KETS is 20. Keshia Knight Pulliam is 23. She could not have been on this episode for the simple fact that Rudy was app. 6 or 7 on this ep and Alicia woild have been 3 -- not a match.

So back to the drawing board as to what episode. We have to keep watching, studying light skinned faces, and reading the credits.

I saw the episode of the sleepover during the marathon shows, and the person listed was Alicia "somebody" but not Keys.

The Alicia on Cosby last night was Alicia Cook. Keys is not her real last name. She adopted that name to reflect her talent on the piano.

Wink MY COSBY VENT!!!!!!!!!

I love me some Cosby!

My favorite Cosby kid was Denise, she was pretty and cool.
Least Favorite was Vanessa, she complained too much!
Favorite Non Cosby: Peter! Every time Peter ran out the house, I was rollin! And when Cosby had him on his knee for the horse ride, he could barely hang on.
Favorite episode: Gordon Gartrell!

Denise:" You don't like it????"
Theo with look on his face:"Ask me that again!!!"

And IT'S TUCKED INTO MY SOCKS!

Second favorite Scene

Theo: "Maybe if you could love me anyway...because I'm your son"
(audience claps)
Cosby: Theo...
(Theo turns around)
Cosby: That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard! No wonder you get D's and everything!

I really thought he was going to say sorry! I should have known.
Maybe Alicia Keys is OLDER than she's saying. Rumor has it that lil bow is really 16 instead of 14. You never know(shrugs)

Ok now that all the nice stuff is out the way it's time for

QTE'S COSBY VENT

let me just start out by saying that RAVEN SIMONE KILLED THE SHOW! Rudy got too big and they sent in this little summin summin to take her place, she was so NOT FUNNY to me. She also ruined Mr.Cooper and Nutty Professor. I know that sounds harsh, but I don't care, it's the truth!

No one has mentioned this yet, and to this day I don't know what the HELL it means:

JAMMIN ON THE ONE, JA-JA-JA JAMMIN ON THE ONE
Even Stevie Wonder "looked" at Theo like "what is this young buck talking about"

The shortage of black actors on the show. Did anyone notice the when Saundra and Elvin(the most boring person on that show after he quit being "pro-man") broke up, Saundra went out with who was LATER Denise's Husband(The non-important Navy Shipman)?

And last(and this was talked about on another site) How I think Cosby felt pressure to get more "black". My house is VERY much like The Cosby's. Cosby went from a high class family to in the last two seasons:

Theo with lines in his head
Vannessa with a crooked bush as a hairdo
Pam "ghetto" self on the show
Denise with dreads after being in Africa.

Ok I'm done. But I still Love The Cosby Show!

I agree, I agree, I agree......I could not stand episodes that had that damn Raven-Simone in them. I didn't like Mr Cooper either when she joined that show, I don't know but there is just something about her that I just didn't like.

You have me cracking the hell up with your Jammin on the one.....oh that is funny.

Yes I did notice when Saundra went out with the guy that Cliff liked it was none other than a later reborn Martin Kendle....do they think that we won't remember this stuff?

Favorite Cosby Kid: Denise. She was so wierd and different and that's why I loved her.
Favorite non Cosby Kid: Kenny. Him and Rudy were so cute together
Favorite episode: I loved Denise's boyfriends. I liked the one where her and her boyfriend were watching reggae on TV and he was sitting there saying "Eh Man" and she joined in. I also like the boyfriend with the Jehri Curl who wore mismatched socks to go against the establishment.

And ya'll I thought I was the only one who didn't like Raven Simone on the show. She just annoyed me for some reason or another.
