Very impressive. Entire generations have no idea what a handy skill this was. Didn't they tend to wear pastels back then?

Miss America was an event that my Mom and I would sit and watch.....it was THE event we looked forward to. I remember the years that Heather Whitestone and Tara Holland won most clearly....don't remember why, but they've ranked as two of my favorites in the two decades or so of me watching, along with Laura Kaeppler. It's been fun watching friends of mine compete at Miss Nevada in the past couple of years...and they've had fun doing it.

Yes indeed. Didn't one of Judy Blume's books have a chapter where the characters watch the Miss America pageant? I want to say the book was It's Not The End Of The World but I could be wrong.

I think I remember that book. The main character had a sister who was a senior and perfect, and they lived in a rich neighborhood but the mom worked as a cleaning lady. A kid at the high school died.

Miss South Dakota is Tessa Dee, an Alpha Phi from University of South Dakota. (EO just tweeted a picture of last year's winner, another APhi, putting the crown on her.)

With all of these Panhellenic women competing, I'm wondering - do any of your Alumnae Panhellenics have a "viewing party" to cheer on our Greek sisters? I think that would be a really fun event!

According to my full list 20/51 are Greek and not all the states have had their pageants yet. Almost a 50% chance of the future Miss America being a greek.

Don't they still have Miss Virgin Islands and Miss Puerto Rico, making 53 contestants?
