And DubaiSis, you are so right. I tend to get stuck on one negative and not see all the positives. After I got over the initial sting of going somewhere I thought I didn't belong, I began to see how well I did fit in. It also helped that everyone (actives and pledge sisters alike) agreed that the skit was awful! We're definitely changing that for next year...

I was extremely active in college theater, love performing on stage, and I HATE rush skits. There are so many ways for it to go bad and it has so little to do with what sororities do the rest of the year.
I know they're traditional on many campuses, but I wish National Panhel would put a stake in them.
A bad skit really turns PNMs off and I've seen it wreck recruitment for some great chapters.

Agreed...they seem so superficial and frankly, completely irrelevant.

The rationale of skits is that it gives the PNMs a few minutes to relax and eat their cheesecake or whatever. Yes, some chapters suck at them, but some chapters suck at video night too (or worse yet, don't even try and use the canned filmstrip from nationals). Some chapters suck at philanthropy night because their philanthropy is something impossible to make a craft for. I think that night needs to be roadkill LONG before skit night.

I don't think they should be done away with altogether because they do provide some benefit. But it just always makes me laugh when a rushee ranks a chapter lower because their skit wasn't as good.
And maybe we SHOULD have our friends do skits for us... HA!

"Worst skit you ever had to perform in" would be a good thread. I remember one year, back in the 80s, we did a Best Little Whorehouse in Texas lip-synch skit. It boggles my mind that anyone involved in recruitment planning thought THAT was a good idea! I remember wondering "how did I get roped into doing THIS?", and also having some serious concerns about the possibility of a wardrobe malfunction!
Hmmm...I wonder if I still have that feathery boa?

Oh man, my sophomore year.. we did a skit based on a PNM going through recruitment and having a hard time deciding which chapter to join. That night, she has a dream where she is visited by her Rho Chi/stylist who brings a rack of clothing that represents different aspects of sorority life: a sisterhood scarf, community service something, and my favorite: GOOD TIMES PANTS. Oy, what a nightmare.
