So are chapters close to 400 women, or do they lose a lot of them during pledgeship?

No chapter has 400 members. I would say post recruitment they range from 175-325. I don't know exact numbers. I'm just basing them off of spring 2010 grades report (minus seniors) and then recruitment numbers this fall 2010. I would say most chapters do a great job with retention. Some struggle with this but overall it's not awful.

^^^I loved looking at the first names and reflecting on how times have changed. Hope there will be ads for the other chapters! Thanks for posting this.

I know the sororities did this at Duke when I was there. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the fraternities also announced their new member classes in the Chronicle.

I also noticed two Paytons in the AOPi group. One of my daughters has a high school friend named Laken (and ironically, her parents are from Nebraska and Iowa, so you can't go with the Southern reasoning behind it! )

If I did a list of my girls' friends names I have a feeling it would look very different than the list of my niece's friends who live in the midwest.

As for my sons....well, I swear all the boys we know are named Will.

My daughter said that when she was at MS State, it seemed like half of every pledge class was composed of Mary _(middle names)__. All of them called by both names, of course!

My great-aunt is from Alabama. Her name is Mary Belle.

One of my friends is an SEC sorority chapter advisor. She posted the bid day ad for her group and the list included:

Mary Katherine (several)
Mary Lynn
Mary Louise
Mary Carter
Mary Frances
Mary Ann
Mary Margaret

And that's just me glancing at it. Who knows how many others there are!

My daughter's husband thinks she should name their first daughter a "Mary plus" name. I'm going to tell her she needs to be really original with that middle name. (Suggestions?)

I went to Ole Miss. When we had our first daughter, my husband really wanted a double name. I agreed to it, but told him it couldn't be anything common. We used Mary Payton. The problem with this is everyone asks me if it is after Peyton Manning.
