As you could probably guess, it took me a long time to fall asleep that night. Even if I got the outcome I wanted, there was still a lot to think about and consider before I could really commit to initiation. I planned on sleeping in so I wouldn’t be going crazy all day, but of course I ended up waking up super early instead. My body loves to spite me like that.

I left my room around the time we were actually supposed to be there because I knew from previous days that they were always running late. I took my place nervously in the long line forming. We would be called into the room in groups of three to five, where each recruitment group had a table. Our Rho Chis would give us an envelope containing our bid, and we would exit from a back door and join our new pledge class in the amphitheater for the Rho Chi reveal. I chatted with the PNMs around me and found another girl, Hannah Abbott, hoping for Bill. She, like me, hadn’t originally wanted them but out of her Pref nights had decided they were her top. She also seemed nervous about the reputation, and I told her what I had been told about them looking to turn it around. She also wasn’t planning on accepting a bid from her second choice,(which was Ginny), so we were both fairly nervous. We entered as part of the same group, and I approached my table. Luna handed me my envelope, which I opened to reveal a card bearing the crest of:

BILL!

aka

KAPPA ALPHA THETA!

Luna squealed and hugged me, as did Hermione. I couldn’t stop grinning as I hurried outside to find Hannah Abbott, who had also received her bid card from Theta. We rushed to the amphitheater to find our pledge class and we eagerly greeted each new member that came to sit with us. When the Rho Chi reveal came, we cheered extra loud for the Theta Rho Chis, which, surprise surprise, included Hermione. As I had already known, Lily was a Fred. Cho turned out to be a Ron, which I was surprised about, but not completely stunned. Luna, however, ended up being a…George?! I was bowled over when she went to join the new pledge class.

As far as the other girls I’ve talked about, I looked around the amphitheater to see that:
Lavender was standing with the new Georges,
Pansy with the Charlies, as she had hoped, and
Petunia was cheering happily with the Rons.
Percy ended up having a decent-sized pledge class of around 20, which is only slightly lower than average (I’m not sure what quota was). I found out later that Millicent had dropped earlier in the week and is now trying to get a non-NPC sorority on campus so they don’t have to follow Panhellenic formal recruitment.

After the Rho Chi reveal, we ran and followed the Theta Rho Chis to the rest of the cheering Thetas, where I saw Katie Bell holding a sign bearing the words, “Theta <3’s Sherry!” and holding a huge sunflower. We got our bid day shirts and some of the fraternities gave us a few other goodies (cards, flowers). We took pictures for what seemed like forever and thoroughly exasperated the photographer because we were so excited and kept breaking out into cheers. We loaded up into limos and headed to the night’s festivities. I won’t go into too much detail, but there was a problem with one of the limos at the bottom of a hill and some girls had to walk back down to it. This meant the limo I was in on the way back was emptier so I actually got the chance to talk to Hermione and some of the other actives. I returned late that night, exhausted and overjoyed.

I get initiated one week from today, and I have fallen in love with Theta more and more with each event I spend with my soon-to-be-sisters. I have already found girls I know will be my best friends and I realize that I was dropped from the other houses because God knew I wasn’t going to make the right decision if it was left up to me. Tonight started clue week for our bigs and mine made me a beautiful frame that was given to me at chapter (: I am so grateful for Hermione and Katie Bell for forcing me to reevaluate my preconceived notions and give Theta a fair chance. In fact, my experience with Hermione has made me really want to be a Rho Chi next year. I am so blessed to get to experience Theta love and I know that while I was initially unsure about rushing, it was the best choice I will make in college.

Congeatulations on Theta! it's amazing what can happen when you keep an open mind. If your campus has a Kappa chapter I hope you enjoy the longstanding Kite & Key tradition!

I loved how you were able to represent the insane flux of emotions recruitment enduces without being mean or critical. Very well done.

YAY! I love a Theta ending! I'm so glad you gave things a chance, and I hope future PNMs read your story and do the same.

Fly your kite proudly, and welcome to Theta!

I really enjoyed your story, especially because you were honest about how your faith and your recruitment intersected. It is always amazing to look back and see how God closes doors in different circumstances to make sure we end up where we are supposed to be, even when we can't clearly see it.

Thanks for sharing your story and congratulations to you and Theta!
Sallie
