Hey SoCal!
I plan on working, volunteering, maintaining relationships, and kicking butt at school this year too Haha I think we can juggle it all.
Good luck again and hopefully we both find our homes!

Ooh! I go to a SoCal school too, a junior, and a veg (if you mean as in vegetarian)!
My orientation is on September 22, I wish you good luck!

So I just got back from orientation! It was really interesting, and a met a few nice girls while I was waiting for it to start. My Rho Gamma and my group all seem really nice, so I'm happy! I'm super excited for recruitment to start on Wednesday!

I just got back from the first day of round 1, and it was amazing! Exhausting, but amazing! I'll be posting a day or two delayed a. So as not to identify who I am since most people know my school and b. Because they actually keep our PNM booklets! Tomorrow is the second day of round 1, and I'm really excited!

I thought that seemed weird too. Why would they not want you to read over your comments later?

Maybe they are worried about confidentiality of the PNMs' impressions? It's a weird way to go about it, but...

The PNM's school isn't the first one that I've read about on GC that does this. Personally, I think it has merits. In my opinion, it "encourages" the PNMs to pay attention and focus immediately after each party and write down their thoughts/impressions.
And I also think that it probably reduces the amount of comparing ("tent talk?") that is inevitable during recruitment. For example, if I don't have my booklet with me, then I'm not writing down what other PNMs think or say after the fact. I write down what happened to me and how I felt/thought/reacted to each chapter I visited.
That's my take on it.

It doesn't reduce tent talk any. I remember outside of one house I visited they just kept on talking about both the house we were about to go in, and how much nearly everyone hated the previous house. And no one was being quiet.
It got so bad a few girls were nearly sent to the office 'cause they wouldn't stop.
This happened a few times during ranking as well.
Also, the whole keeping the booklet thing was very easy to get around. I saw a few other girls doing it as well, but I know that I just brought another booklet and wrote my thoughts down twice..

ROUND ONE!
I had soo much fun throughout round one, and I'm really excited for tonight as well. I followed the suggestion of bringing a second notebook, and copied over my thoughts and such during break. These are listed in random order, and the colors I chose have no connection to any of the sorority's colors. Anyways, here we go!
BMW: I absolutely fell in LOVE with this house! I’ll admit, I was somewhat surprised, because based on some tent talk, I kind of got the feeling that I would be “inadequate,” so to speak, for this house (this was one of the “snowball’s chance in Hell houses that I mentioned in my original post). However, once I got in there, all the girls I talked to were amazingly sweet and friendly, and I clicked really well with them, especially the 2nd girl that I talked to! I believe I talked to either 3 or 4 girls in this house. This was probably my favorite house, and I’m really really hoping to receive an invite back today.
Bentley: I also really really enjoyed this house. The inside was decorated beautifully, and their shirts were adorable. I talked to 3 girls here, and they were all really friendly, and the conversation flowed really well with no awkward silences or “cookie cutter” rush questions.
Mercedes: I’m somewhat torn on this house. Whereas in other houses, the officers who meet you at the door are extremely nice and bubbly, the two here kind of looked through me. Obviously, they smiled and such, but they seemed…unimpressed, for lack of a better word. The first girl I talked to practically ripped my fingers off with her abrupt, hard handshake, but once we had talked for 5 or 10 minutes she seemed to slightly (very slightly) warm up to me. The girls I talked to after that were much much nicer, so I’m a little confused about this house. I don’t think I’ll be getting an invite back.
Honda: I believe I talked to 2 girls in this house, and they were both really friendly and we seemed to have a lot in common! Again, there were no awkward silences or rush-type questions, and things flowed really well as just a natural conversation. The first girl seemed to like me a little better than the second, but like I said, both were friendly! I’m a little nervous, however, because I know this house was put on social probation last year for hazing, but I still enjoyed the party!
Nissan: I enjoyed this party as well. I talked to three girls here, and I connected really well with the first and we had similar interests and career goals. I don’t really remember the second girl I talked to, but I don’t remember any negative or uncomfortable feelings in this house, so I’m assuming it went well! The last girl I talked to was absolutely adorable and really sweet, and it was a lot of fun talking to her.
Infiniti: This party was a lot of fun. It was decorated beautifully and it was just a gorgeous, open house. The first girl I talked to seemed really genuine and sweet, and we had a ton to talk about. The second girl seemed a bit…fake. Even more so than the usual “it’s recruitment so I have to be nice” fake. She didn’t seem to dislike me; she just didn’t seem very interested in me either. But the third girl was really nice too, and because of her and the first one, I really liked this house. I figured that I shouldn’t let the second girl influence my view of the house too heavily, so I’m still hoping to be invited back!
Mazda: This is another house that I was pretty torn about. On one hand, the girls were really sweet and conversation went well. But on the other, I didn’t really feel much of a connection with any of the girls I was talking to, but more of a distant friendliness, if that makes sense. I didn’t really get much of a feel for this house, so if I do get invited back, maybe I’ll be able to form more of an opinion.
Lincoln: Their house was beautiful, and I really liked their theme. The first girl I spoke with was insanely sweet, and it was really fun to talk to her. The second one was nice as well, but I feel like I chose kind of a strange conversation topic (it was based on what she said when she came over, and it wasn’t a bad topic or anything, just…strange). They seemed to like me in this house, and I liked them as well, so I’m hoping to go back!
Ford: This house is only participating in the first round, and then doing their own recruitment, so we didn’t rank this house. They did a presentation for us, and it was really nice, and then we walked around to four stations and looked through scrapbooks and listened to speeches about their history. It was a really cute house and everyone was very nice, but we didn’t get to meet any actives, only the alums (is that the correct word?). I wish they were able to continue with the rest of recruitment, because I was interested in learning more about them!
Buick: I wasn’t really in love with this house. I mean, the girls I spoke with were very nice and friendly, but I just didn’t feel a connection at all. Conversation seemed to be somewhat forced, and this was the first house where we were constantly discussing typical rush questions (What year are you? What’s your major? What do you do for fun? Those types of questions). At other houses, they’d ask maybe one of those questions, and then we’d end up on a completely different, more conversational topic. Like I said, they were really nice and sweet and the house was beautiful, but at this point in time, I don’t really see myself there.
Audi: This is really random, but I absolutely LOVED their song! It was adorable! The first girl I talked to was really perky and ditzy, but not in a bad way at all. I absolutely LOVED talking to her, she was sooo much fun! We had a really good conversation about their sisterhood and other things, and I was sad when she left! The second girl was nice as well and fun to talk to, but there was a (very brief!) awkward silence, which I’m really hoping didn’t count against me. I LOVED this house, and I’m hoping to get invited back!
Toyota: For some reason I don’t have anything written for this one, so I’ll have to go from memory! I remember that I talked to three girls at this house, and they were all really fun! I had a lot in common with the first and second girls, which made me happy. The third girl was nice too, and we talked about a topic that I absolutely love, so I was doubly happy! I’m not really sure if I felt a connection with them, but it was still nice talking to them!
Out of the 11 houses (Number 12, Ford, drops out), we ranked our top 8. My ranking went as follows:
1. BMW
1. Bentley
1. Honda
1. Nissan
1. Infiniti
1. Lincoln
1. Audi
1. Toyota
2. Mercedes
3. Mazda
4. Buick

Ford?
How can a Sorority only do the first round and then their own thing? With her only meeting alumnae, it sounds like a chapter that got into a *lot* of trouble with their national, and National moved all of the sisters to alumna status and are bringing local alumnae not recently from the chapter.
(Just a guess)

Ford sounds to me like a group that is colonizing.

most colonies will participate in the first round of formal recruitment to let those going through recruitment know that they're coming, then have open recruitment afterwards.

Or Ford could be a group that chooses not to participate in Formal Rush. Didn't we have a PNM recently who became a new member of SDT in this manner, after going through Formal Recruitment but not accepting a bid? I think so. And SDT was an established sorority, not a colony, if memory serves.
