Ok, so I knew nothing about this girl at all. Or this situation.

Since you mentioned her, I Googled this person and I kid you not, the first suggestion was "Kim Torres AKA"

LOL. Wow. Must have been kind of a big deal.

ETA: Just skimmed a few of the search results. Double wow.

*really* wierd perp(?) situation

In one of the more recent Power Rangers (Mystic Force), in one of the episodes, one of the five power rangers is wearing a t-shirt with the Alpha Phi Omega coat of arms on it. The actor is from Australia or New Zealand, which makes them being a brother fairly unlikely...

Does that count?

Are the Power Rangers in college now? I could almost give them that if they're in college as an in character shirt not representative of the actor.

It took me about 5 minutes and one email to the chapter's current president to bust a GC Sigma perp.

Also funny:

I have heard of people perping in big cities like NYC thinking they'll never be found out. Ex: move to Chicago, decide to perp because no one here knows me or will care.

Nope. Greekdom is still a really small world, even in a big city.

Or perping a really big chapter thinking that because there are so many initiates, no one will know you're lying. False.
It's even worse, i think, to perp in a bigger city. For starters, there are likely to be more members. With more members, in a big city, comes geographic diversity - so many transplants (school, work, moving with a spouse/family) that it would be uber quick to bust Perpin' Patrice, who's claiming to have become a member of XYZ back in the day at State U. Guess what? the alumnae chapter president went to Tech, down the street from State U and guess what - they didn't have a line that semester, or they were inactive.

exit Perpin' Patrice.

sidenote: someone got busted as a perp on twitter. its that serious yall.

I don't know why people think they can get away with, ESPECIALLY with all the social networks popping up.

That makes a lot of sense.

Perping is impossible with FB/MySpace/Twitter/etc. It's funny, because if you kept to yourself, it might be harder to figure out that you're fake. But most people who perp really can't do that (I think they want the attention). lol. The sorority they claim is all over their social networking sites and such. It's too easy. Like GC Sigma perp. Wouldn't have known too much about it if I hadn't seen her MySpace (which was perpalicious).

It's just not worth it because I have never heard of someone getting away with it their whole lives. Everyone is found out eventually.

Exactly. You know the folks that are perping are also trying to friend request real members. It's silly for them to think that, at some point, said members aren't going to figure it out.

Link to Perps

Wasn't there a thread on here a while back that linked to a Facebook group of found out perps? I could have sworn there was. I want to say that DS had posted the link but, please don't quote me on that one because I don't necessarily know if it was him. I do know I clicked on the link and it was really funny. There was one big fat white girl wearing Alpha Phi Alpha gear with a smile. I don't think she even knew that it was an NPHC fraternity.

Isn't there a APO Australia? I remember reading about it as a pledge doing research. Maybe associated with APO in the Philippines.

Right.

I've never seen/heard of a perp who didn't go out of her way to befriend actual XYZs on these sites, make her profile all XYZ, talk about XYZ in her profile, join XYZ groups, etc. I mean, no one perps just to keep it to themselves. They want everyone to know. Thus leading to their downfall (actual members seeing it, noticing that some things don't add up, and wondering if she's legit).

I seriously wonder what goes on in some people's heads. Like, at what point do you say "Oh I know, since I can't actually BE an XYZ (or don't want to attempt it), I'll just PRETEND to be an XYZ?"

Or "I depledged XYZ NPC org but I'll just tell people I'm in it."

Or "I was terminated from XYZ, but I'll just fake like I'm still in it."

It's just weird to me.

There are everyday perps and situational perps.

A situational perp is like my post in the DST Random Thoughts thread. The man thought he could claim a BGLO frat without being questioned about it. Fail.

I also know of people who dropped line or the line got dropped for some reason, but they claim they crossed when they are in a new state and meet someone from "an unofficial brother or sister organization." For instance, a woman who tried but did not cross Delta in college and claims to be a Delta when she moves to another state and meets Omegas at professional and social events. Welp, the funny thing about life is that these women often encounter people who are FRIENDS with the Deltas from the yard she is claiming and know she wasn't a Delta. That's always a funny encounter. Seriously.

I find that depledged and terminated perps are the worst as they tend to believe that because they were once initiated members (or NMs who pledged the chapter but never initiated), they have "ties" to an org and are somehow entitled to still be able to "claim" it.

Nope.

No, I don't care that you LOVED Sigma prior to whatever circumstances occured. I don't care that you "were an officer" or something.

You do not have "just as much of a right to these letters." (yes, I have heard that).

You fail.
