Bumped due to Who Pays thread
My best first date was due to complete serendipity.
Married friends had a guy call me, thinking we'd hit it off. We did, and he asked me to go out to dinner at a VERY romantic and expensive place. I was dressed to the nines, date showed up, and when we got to the car, he told me that he had received a phone call just prior to leaving. His godson was having his fifth birthday, and wanted him to come to dinner. He told his godson that he would have to get back to him.
I said, sure, why not? First dates are all about getting to know the other person. So, we ended up at his godson's, having lasagne with his family. We played with the kids, told them bedtime stories, got to know his cousins, and generally had a laid back but homey time. I can't put my finger on what made this so nice, other than neither of us had an agenda, other than enjoying time with a 5 year old and his family.
We had a misunderstanding soon afterwards, and then I met my current guy. I've wondered what might have been, without the misunderstanding, but I'm happy with my guy.
I think I'm saying (in light of the other thread) that it really doesn't matter how fancy that first date is, as long as both parties are treated with respect. I could have been mean and said that I was much too dressed up to have dinner in a kitchen, and he could have neglected to open doors, etc which would have been red flags to me. In retrospect, I hope he found the right woman for him, and is still enjoying dinners with his godson!
