The EXACT same thing happened to me! It was close through rush between Chi O and "XYZ" but XYZ dropped me right before pref, but I knew by then that Chi O was for me! I suicided b/c I wasn't comfortable in the other house I preffed. I was the happiest person alive when I opened my bid card and saw Chi O! Now, looking at XYZ, they came off very differently during rush and I would not have been happy there. I am a Chi O hardcore!

I knew going into rush that I wanted either Pi Phi or Chi Omega, I didn't care. Pi Phi definately ended up being the place for me though, I preffed them! So yes!

I went to college knowing I would rush... a girl I greatly admired joined a sorority and told me about how wonderful it actually was, and not the awful stereotypes a lot of high schoolers hear. I tried checking out the sororities websites, but only Alpha Phi's was up, and at the time, it wasn't very complete.
I got to know an orientation counselor named Jenn through a mutual friend. When it was finally time for Meet the Greeks, I dragged two of my friends along with me and met all the sororities. Or rather, I should say, one. XYZ sorority talked my ear off and I didn't get to meet Alpha Phi. However, I was really excited to talk to them and seemed to fit in well with them. My roommate, who I didn't care much for, talked to XYZ for about a minute before she went and talked to Alpha Phi, because she found out that most of the cheerleading squad was Alpha Phi. When it was time to go inside, I ran into Jenn, sporting some Alpha Phi letters. During the actual presentations, XYZ made a somewhat snide comment that bothered me a little bit, but I was determined to give both groups a fair chance.
Throughout formal recruitment, I was pretty sure that I was going to go XYZ. My roommate had her mind set on Alpha Phi, and to be totally honest, I was rather glad, because I didn't care too much for my roommate. However, I was starting to even out a bit in that I met several nice Alpha Phis. I felt that I had more in common with XYZ because they were very into intramurals, and I'm a big soccer player, but I felt like I had more in common with Alpha Phis in terms of personalities.
Come Pref Night, I was invited to both. I was torn. I hoped that one of them wouldn't invite me back so that I wouldn't have to make a choice. My roommate of course, was only invited back to Alpha Phis. I went to Alpha Phi's first and was really touched by the Forget-Me-Not ceremony. Jenn, as it turned out, preffed me. I had a great time and honestly didn't want to leave. However, Jenn asked me a question that terrified me, "Honestly now, do you want to join Alpha Phi?" I pretty much stammered that I was on the fence, but after seeing how well I got along with everyone, I was beginning to feel at home with Alpha Phi. I didn't want to be cut because I wasn't sure, but I had to be honest. Then I went to XYZ's Pref, and the girl who I had been getting along with from XYZ preffed me and another girl, because they were so sure that I was going to suicide them. All I could think about during the entire ceremony was Alpha Phi. I realized that it was them that I wanted a bid from. When I filled out my Pref card that night, I ranked Alpha Phi as number 1 and XYZ as number 2. What now terrifies me is that I think I should have Intentional Single Preffed, or whatever the hell they call it. Some people look down on it, but when you know where you belong, you just know. I didn't realize how the bidding system actually worked, so if XYZ had put me number 1 on their list, I would have gotten a bid from them. Luckily, Alpha Phi actually put me as their number 1 because they knew how bad XYZ wanted me, and Jenn told them she knew I wanted Alpha Phi (well, I wish I had known as well! ).
I sprinted to the SUB that day to get my Bid. I jumped around like a complete moron when I opened my bid and saw the Alpha Phi crest. My roommate also got a bid, but I figured I'd live (and what do you know, I did). Jenn still gives me a hard time about me not knowing where I belong, but I guess she has a right to, because she's my big sis.

what a fun thread! and its totally meanignful to me.
yes, i did get my first choice, and it only took a year and a half! i went through the first parties of formal rush at IU, in the fall of 2001. when i returned for the next rounds, i had been dropped by everyone but 2 houses. of course i had had a favorite, and of course, they werent one of the 2 that invited me back. i was bummed. i dropped out of rush. later in january i went to an informal party at one of the houses that had asked me back, but decided that even though they were super sweet girls, they werent me.
then there was the chance that tri sigma was coming to colonize at IU sometime soon, so i was working with the group of girls that was trying to head that up. all the while, i was still jealous every time i saw my favorite group on campus, and eventually accepted (grudgingly) that i wouldnt be one of them. but i worked with the tri sigma wanna be group through spring and fall of 2002 only to have it lead nowhere.
i ended up transferring to indiana state, and was pretty sure i was gonna be a DG because thats what my best friend/roommate was, and i already knew most of them. but then i found out that my *favorite* from IU Was doing informal as well, and i knew i owed it to myself to check them out. so i did. turned out i loved them at ISU as much as i had at IU, if not more so. and they loved me too! i am now a very very very proud member of alpha chi omega. it was a long haul, but every day i look at my lavaliere, or my history book, or talk to one of my sisters, i am reminded that the long trip was worth it
AX love and mine

Yup, I ranked Theta first all the way through recruitment. I had heard good things about the house before rush, so I guess they were my first choice even before recruitment started. Then on the first day they were the last house I visited, and I felt like I was at home in the house talking to the sisters. Throughout recruitment there were two houses that I really liked, and I think I could have been happy at either, but I'm glad that I got my first choice!

I never went through recruitment my freshman year because I didn't know alot about sororities, plus I was very shy and I figured that it wouldn't work out too well. So all my freshman year I saw girls in sororities and I wanted that, because I saw how close the sisters were and I was envious of that.
I thought about rushing my sophomore year, but I knew it is harder for sophomores to get bids at my school (though my freshman year roommate went through recruitment her soph year and went Gamma Phi Beta). So I thought that there would be no chance for me to be in a sorority as an undergrad, and that made me sad because I really wanted to be in a sorority. Then in November of my sophomore year (this past Nov) I heard that Delta Gamma was recolonizing at Auburn and I was so excited! I went through DG's recruitment and became a member of the colonizing pledge class!!
Even though I think it would have been fun to go through Recruitment, I know that Delta Gamma is my home!

LOL, I'm guessing that I'm the only one who got her first choice but ended up being unhappy with it. When I went through rush, I was in love with one group from day one, and I ended up getting a bid but I dropped out after a few weeks because it just wasn't for me and I didn't feel at home there.
Years later, I decided to pursue alumna initiation. Granted, it's a completely different experience, but after researching all of the NPC organizations, I decided on one organization and I am now a proud member.
So I guess you can say that I got my first choice twice!

I was in love with one sorority while attending the college I used to go to. When I transfered to MTSU I knew that I would go through recruitment and join XYZ. But after I went to their parties, I found out that they were different from the group I knew at the other school. While they are great girls and a great organization, I really saw that I would not fit in. I would not admit to myself that I liked a different sorority. It was a good thing when they dropped me. I was upset, but it gave me a chance to really look at the other sororities with an open mind. I LOVE being in Delta Zeta. At first it was not my first choice, but I was biased. I am really happy where I am, I would not have enjoyed the other group as much. Plus, MTSU is VERY panhellenic so I have friends from all the sororities. I am happy with my choice, even though if you would have asked me before recruitment I would have said no way! One thing you have to remember is that all GLO's are different on each campus.

I got my first choice!!!!
And it is one of the best choices I have ever made in my life!
I knew after the first five minutes of each party, where I belonged. I made the best of the week with XYZ but I had my heart set on Phi Sig. I even attended XYZ's preference just so I could compare it with FSS. lets just say it sealed the deal on where I wanted to go -- no offense to them, their pref was nice, but Phi Sig is my home.

I did, thank goodness. My roommate had suicided her house the year before and told me how everyone told her not to, but she ended up where she belonged. When I went to sign my card after Pref, I really wanted to suicide XO but decided not to. I was afraid the "Bid Matching Gods" would punish me by not letting me get Chi Omega! I spent the rest of the night worried that I would get the other house (which was full of great girls, but just not "me"). I breathed a sigh of relief on Bid Day when one of the girls who attended Chi O pref with me had the same size envelope with the same handwriting on the front! We hugged each other before we even opened the envelopes!!!
