Tom was totally over the top but, if this is a publicity stunt, then he deserves another Oscar for the "performance." I guess I'm the only one who thought it seemed genuine.

I think Tom is a great actor. He always seems so cool in the movies, but so dorky in interviews. His dorkiness really topped all previous dorkiness today, though. Wow- I was embarassed for him.

I decided to watch this today instead of Ellen. The first few minutes were so that I couldn't stop watching.

What is going on with this dude? I sat here for most of the show asking, "WTF?" I mean, seriously, jumping on sofas? And what was up with the "thinking man" pose?

Did anyone else notice that Katie kept telling him, "I love you?" I don't think I ever saw him say it back to her. I have a feeling Katie is star struck. And Tom, well, he likes the fact that she's a young one.

That was just too sugary sweet. I had to keep changing the channel. In a way, it did seem like it was genuine. FOr some odd reason, Tom kept reminding me of Wil Truman from Wil and Grace during that interview. I wonder if Chris Klein tuned in?

See, I'm the opposite here. I find Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas kind of icky together (she can do so much better!), to say nothing of Lara Flynn Boyle and Jack Nicholson (when they are together. total ick!) But this doesn't creep me out at all. Maybe it's because Tom Cruise is hot and I'd date him if he asked me. (yeah, I'd make an exception to the 7 years in either direction rule and the men-with-kids rule for him!)

You should see what some people are saying on the Oprah.com message boards. One post in particular calls him a pedophile and a male Mary Kay LeTourneau. I think it has been deleted from that board but you can read it here.

This whole thing reminds me of a quote from my Latin book:

"I don't think anyone knows I love her because I haven't done anything foolish yet"

Even the ancient Roman guys went nuts when they fell in love.

i missed oprah, but caught a smidgen of interview to be aired tonite that they played this am on the today show. i have never seen anyone so giddy as tom cruise was in that interview. it was so bizarre-he went on and on like i would expect a teenybopper to gush if she met orlando bloom. i couldn't help but think that this all came about because he wanted to get back in the media spotlight. i mean, how many other people would be able to garner all this attention just because they started dating someone? weird, weird, weird!!

This isn't the first time this has happened on Oprah.

Does anyone remember when Ellen and Anne Heche were on the show? Anne comes out and is all gushing over Ellen, saying how much she was in love with her, and she was so happy, and this was love at first sight and it was meant to be. And then months later, they were split up and Anne Heche was dating some guy.

They are using Oprah as a media platform because they know how many people watch her show and they know it's a great way tom plug their movies.

I agree with the skeptics, I think its a Hollywood sham to plug their movies.

Sheez people, and I thought I was the cynical one on this board.

Fall in love much ? Don't any of you remember when you were infatuated and how foolish others would have thought you were? And how giddy?

I suppose that people in their forties can't feel that way? Maybe its something lost when they age?

I have no idea whether what they have is genuine, but neither does anyone else.

As far as who is taking advantage of who, well this is Tom Cruise we are talking about.

A quick reality check: if Tom just wanted to hook up with much younger girls he could walk into any vacation place in the world or any college town and have his pick.

This is not helping Tom's career, he was already a household name, but this is certainly raising Holmes's profile.

So if we need to be cynical maybe we should think that Tom is being played? Because I see no real benefit for him out of this.

Also, I was watching one female "Talking heaD" and she was commenting on Tom's vocabulary.

Tom described Katie as Magnificient and that he was enamored . . . and the commentator was saying none of her friends spoke that way . .. all I could think was that none of her friends had a very good every day vocabulary.

There's two reasons that came to mind almost immediately for me, and the first is almost too easy, but I'll say it anyway:

1) He's still stuck in the closet and she's his beard.
2) Hero worship. Katie's running around telling people about how "she dreamed of marrying Tom Cruise when she was a little girl and sometimes dreams come true!" (ick). Given her newfound commitment to Scientology, it appears that she might be overly willing to defer to his opinions and conform to his lifestyle while praising him constantly -- what guy isn't going to be flattered by that?

It helps Tom alot... yes, he is a household name but he is losing the comming generation and to have that connection with someone 20 years younger helps freshin him to the younger public... he does need this especially since his last couple of films were all geered to real mature audiences

AND Tom's getting TONS of free publicity from it. His name is mentioned daily in both the tabloid journals/shows as well as the legitimate news. Katie Holmes "converting" to Scientology made the front page of cnn.com, just like anything else in their relationship does. He's being talked about everywhere

I used to think Chris Klein was pretty hot in the American Pie movies and Election, but then, he started making dumb movies, and eh....

It's funny how quickly someone can fall after they make some bad choices.

I caught this interesting little paragraph (read carefully, especially the last line):

Last month, Cruise sent eyebrows skyrocketing with his now infamous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he bounded around the stage, springing on and off furniture, before sinking to the floor to declare his rapturous admiration for Cruise.

in this article

Simple mistake, or astute observation?

He proposed under the Eiffel tower. Supposedly her ring is "oversized" according to the AP (my producer just told me this came over the wires).

Tom Cruise Proposes to Katie Holmes By SOPHIE NICHOLSON, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago

PARIS - Actor Tom Cruise said he and girlfriend Katie Holmes are engaged, after he popped the question early Friday morning atop the Eiffel Tower.

Cruise, speaking at a Paris news conference with Holmes, said: "Yes, I proposed to her."

The couple often shared smiles and blushes as Cruise turned to look at her, with a massive diamond ring on her finger.

"It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all," he said. "Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman."

Asked why he chose the famed Paris landmark, he said: "I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."

Cruise said no date for a wedding has been set: "We haven't discussed that — one step at a time," he said. "Let's see. We're not sure."

Cruise, 42, was in Paris to promote the French release of the Steven Spielberg film "War of the Worlds" next month. He and 26-year-old Holmes went public with their romantic relationship in April.

Holmes did not speak to reporters, but at one point, Cruise whispered to her: "Are you OK?" Afterward, the two hurried into a car before leaving for a promotional event in Marseilles, southern France.

I was reading in the paper this morning the Tom has hired a female minder to follow Katie around where ever she goes.

That seems a little odd to me.
