I was going to mention the Hope scholarship as an incentive to remain in GA for those women who didn't quite qualify for the free rides at Alabama. Alabama is definitely reaching out to the out of state highly qualified applicants however. They were even at our high school's college fair. They were the only school from a state that didn't actually border Michigan who came. When my son told the women his stats, she started on the hard sell. In the end, he decided the school was just too big and too far from home, even it would have been totally free.
Also, when you have a free ride due to merit, those sorority dues don't seem all that expensive!

I didn't mean it was a surprise that Texas has so many girls, I have roots in the state, I would absolutely think they probably would have a lot! I meant that it was something to me personally that they would now have more than Georgia with the state being right next door to Alabama. I've kept track of the number of out-of-state students by state with sorority recruitment and overall at Alabama for a number of years now and other states have had up and down years while Texas has consistently grown - from fourth place among states other than Alabama to now number one. Again, I think they're really representing well!!

More girls this year seemed to be staying in state to use the Hope scholarship.

Hmm, interesting.

Ahh - you left out UCLA (and Berkeley, I guess). UCLA has long had the highest number of applicants of any university in the nation, and this year had more than 86,000 freshman applicants for 6,000 spots. An additional 19,000 applied for transfer admission.
UCLA in-state tuition is nearly $13,000, aid money has been slashed in recent years, and residence halls cost more than $14,000 a year. I notice that Alabama's out-of-state tuition is comparable to the University of California in-state tuition, and residence hall costs are about 1/3 the cost.
I'm not surprised that there's a major glut of really well qualified California students who can't get into or can't afford UC schools, and might prefer to go to a flagship out-of-state school rather than stay local and attend a Cal State.

^^^continuing the swerve/
Arizona has a significant # of CA students (I can't speak for ASU, haven't done any research) due to the steep cost of attending an in-state university or college (either the UC system or the CSU system). It's closer to home for these students, as well.
/end swerve

Our PNM is a recipient of one of these scholarships, and she did tell me that it allowed her parents to readily support sorority membership.

The Hope Scholarship is keeping more and more of our Georgia students in state. My son went to a private school in Atlanta and each year UGA is the college that most of the kids elect to attend if they can get in. Bama does seem to attract some of the guys (five from my son's grade went there) but very few girls.

Not meaning to be political here but just to state a fact, ole' Zell Miller really came up with a gem when he got that started. I don't think he would have been reelected Governor in the GOP wave year 94' if he hadn't had that silver bullet.

Small swerve again. Am I the only one who saw the princess in the Alabama pictures.? On the www.al.com website there is a link to Alabama bid day pictures. In one of the pictures, an apparent new member is walking with two other girls out of the stadium towards the houses. The girl on the left has on a pink dress, white sash with the "PRINCESS". I hope she didn't wear her sash to the recruitment parties!
If you would like to see the picture, it is in the group called "The running of the bids", picture 66 of 156. I couldn't get the picture to post.

It's probably something her new big/bid day buddy gave her. ZTA, maybe? The bid day photos are just beginning to pop up, so maybe we'll find out soon.

I see. Since they're wearing dresses, they are probably members, not PNMs. The PNMs wear tank tops so that they can put their new T shirts on top.

That is exciting for Texas! I wrote several recommendations for girls going to Alabama and Auburn in the past couple of years. My own high school junior is leaning towards both Alabama and Auburn right now.
