Old Money
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Old money refers to families who have been wealthy for several generations, as a term distinguishing them from the nouveau riche and parvenus."

In the South, and I am sure other parts as well (Philadelphia's Main Line as an example) 'Old Money' may include not only generations of it, but how and where the money was acquired. Some ways are, well, just gauche.

why stereotypes?

as someone who is very unfamiliar with the southern schools, i understand that at a fundamental level there are differences in the sororal culture, unfortunately from pop culture outlets i've encountered (robbin's book springs to mind immediately)...

as for the stereotypes in the quiz, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, as the chapters i'm familiar with are as materialistic as we are suggesting the southern schools may be, albeit with different "brands"... not everyone is gushing over lily pulitzer, brighton or vera bradley, but fendi, tiffany's, coach and juicy are just as popular as some of the things suggested in the quiz...

how much of these north v. south stereotypes are actually true? are there northern/midwestern/western stereotypes too? and what impact are they having on our sororities?
