The numbers jumped by 20 in just 2 hours yesterday! This year will have smashed any previous records for number of PNM's registered for recruitment.

hi! I'm an incoming freshman at UK and after reading this I'm beginning to get really nervous with sooo many other girls rushing. i mean I've really been reading and trying to do as much research as possible but now I'm just really nervous! lol

does being a legacy really help that much? and i read something about like secondary legacies (aunts and cousins) and do those matter? b/c my mom was in one, and i have tons of aunts and cousins who were in them too (luckily all were sororities uk has)

and i saw in the brochure say no heels most of the days but all my aunts say wear heels! so heels or no heels? and i too have many questions lol. i hope its not annoying

If any of your aunts are Sigma Kappas, you are a legacy. Most NPCs do not consider nieces to be legacies though. Your cousins can write you recs (as long as they are not actives in UK chapters, though some NPCs do not allow any actives to write recs). Your cousins would be able to write very informative, personal recs, which should help.

I don't think the heel height is as important as the dressiness of the shoes. Maybe find cute, dressy flats/low heeled shoes?

No heels at least until pref unless you are already super comfortable in them! You are going to be walking A LOT, the walk from Pi Phi to KKG can be the longest walk in the history of the world in 90 degree weather, or even worse-in rain! Some girls even carry different shoes in their bags to change into for the walks alone.

uk08 - Welcome!

Don't be nervous about the number of girls rushing. When more girls rush, sororities just get to have bigger new member classes. It really takes care of itself.

Legacies help, but they don't get you a bid automatically. Most NPC sororities have a policy where they invite legacies to at least one round of parties, if they meet qualifications. Make sure your relatives let their chapters know you're coming, and put it out of your mind as much as you can. Go look for the chapter that fits you the best.

Will you be in the dorms this year? The best what to wear advice is to find out what the best-dressed girls in your rush group are wearing, then adjust. This might be the year that everyone wears heels and suffers, or it might not. Nothing wrong with flats, or flip flops in a bag!

Most of all, meet people and have fun. My freshman year roommate didn't rush, and she was so jealous when she got to campus a week later than everyone else, and the rest of us already knew each other and were doing things together. Even when my hallmates didn't pledge the same sorority, we had a bond just from going through recruitment together.

GOOD LUCK!
UK is an awesome awesome place! I have a best girl friend going through recruitment at UK as well and she is very excited! I just talked to her last night and she was getting all her things together to make the trip to move in today! All I know is (and I am also a PNM so just take this as something I've heard and not gospel!) that she was advised that at UK most girls dress up over the suggested clothing guidelines, so she was planning on with every outfit up to Pref wearing more casual shoes and carrying a nicer pair in case thats what others were wearing and also carrying a dressier lightweight cardigan.

Have an awesome time! As someone who still has a month to go before rush I am jealous

ME TOO!! I think I'm even more nervous after reading everything on here than I was before! But I'm also more excited. I can't believe how many girls are doing this! I'm going to have to rethink my outfits now, too, so I'm not underdressed...

The number of PNMs doesn't really make it any more or less competitive. Every chapter is allowed to take an equal share of "pie". At UK, each chapter is allowed 1/12 of the PNMs ranking after preference round. This is called quota. So if the number of PNMs increases, so does quota.

Anyways, relax and worry about things you can control, like conversation skills and being well-groomed.

Me too! The good news is that every day we get closer to Recruitment the forecast seems to push the rain out an extra day! So lets hope it continues on that path.

We had orientation today, and I'm a little more nervous than I was before...our Gamma Chi hadn't read her book and hadn't put together our bags and such, so she was pretty unprepared. She couldn't really answer very many of our questions, and I wonder if maybe she was a last minute addition or something? She was really sweet, and I know she has a really tough job, she just didn't seem to know much about the whole process, and what she did know was based on her own experience two years ago. I'm a little worried now about getting through this week since she doesn't seem to know what we're doing any more than we do!

Will I be able to carry a small tote bag with me with a change of shoes and some things like deodorant and make up to touch up with? And does anyone know if all of the extra events, like concerts and ice cream socials, are mandatory this week? I know that all of the sorority events are mandatory of course, but we have a few things on the schedule that are not sorority events. The only reason I ask is that most of them are sort of late at night (9-ish) and I have to drive back and forth every day from my house, which is about 45 minutes away!

Thank you all again for the help...I felt so prepared when I was in Orientation today because of all that I've read on Greek Chat!!

Ask away- we are all here to help you. I was at UK and was a rush counselor/Gamma Chi many years ago. UK is competitive, but not super-competitive or almost cutthroat like other SEC schools are. Relax- your Gamma Chi can ask the other Gamma Chi's about any specific questions- and if you have any important ones, I believe that you can contact the Panhellenic office at UK. But it is important to remember that everyone's experience is different. Your Gamma Chi's experience and training prepares her to respond to some of the situations that will occur- with others, she will be reaching for her own instinct on how to guide you.

Here is a case in point: When I was a rush counselor, one of the top girls in rush that year was a Pi Phi legacy and I knew that my chapter would have loved to have her. Before Pref night, she cut my house stating that she did not want to do it because it would hurt me (the PNM's looked us up in the yearbook, and knew all the affiliations, which she then told me). I told her that it would not, cringing inside because I knew that I wanted her and so did my entire house. I was disaffiliated, and had to respond as a rush counselor, not as a sorority member. After Pref, she asked me to help her decide between 2 houses. I had to tell her that the decision was hers and that in one of those houses the girls were more special to her than the other house. She had to decide. It is not always easy to guide a group of girls, and you should try to give your Gamma Chi a chance to show what she is capable of. Remember-one of the chapters on that campus counts her as a sister, and she may even end up being your sister, for all you know.
