No, you aren't wasting your time rushing!!!!! Absolutely go through with it and give it your best shot. I am from Georgia and have many Greek friends at VSU who would advise you to rush as well!
I rushed as a Sophomore at Auburn University. Many chapters there accept girls who have transferred in or waited 1 year to rush. Just be upfront and honest. Use your situation to your advantage. Point out how being an older PNM (potential new member) can be good because you could bring maturity and confidence to a chapter. Sometimes differences like that can be good because you can be more easily remembered as chapters are deciding invites.
It's good that you informed them of you medical condition. They need that information to protect you in the event that something happens. That information shouldn't be used against you and won't be available to the masses. It will probably never leave the Greek Life office files...only used for emergencies.
As for the recs, ask literally EVERYONE you know! You'd be suprised at how many alums surround you everyday! Ask ladies in church, at work, at your mother's work, friends, etc. Don't be shy. Be proactive.
Lastly, remember to be confident and be yourself! Best of luck!
