Changed.

AOII's Upsilon Lambda chapter is University of Texas-San Antonio, founded in 1978. Upsilon Lambda stands for the chapter submotto of United for Life.

I was going to suggest that perhaps the first post could be edited as "Founding" chapters. Then there could be a post listing the Alpha chapters.

So to use Chi Omega as an example, in the first post (founding) it would be Arkansas. For Alpha chapters it would be Washington. When it comes to Psi chapters a designation as the founding chapter could be noted as well.

We'll just see what happens when people start posting other letters. It will all work out in the end. Or GC will implode on itself, and the world will come to an end. Whatever.

Seriously people....I just started the thread because I had a random idea. Feel free to make up your own rules as you go along.

This should be fun, not too serious. Corrections will be made as we go so don't fret.

FYI - If you're using an edition of Baird's, the info can be way off.

Shamelessly taken from the 1977 Baird's, so info may or may not be exact:

Beta Chapters

Alpha Chi Omega - Albion
Alpha Delta Pi - Winstong Salem 1905-1910
Alpha Epsilon Phi - Hunter 1909-1970
Alpha Gamma Delta - Wisconsin
Alpha Omicron Pi - Brown 1908-1908 (the potentially 9th chapter)
Alpha Phi - Northwestern
Alpha Sigma Alpha - Lewisburg (WVA) 1903-1904
Alpha Sigma Tau - Central Michigan
Alpha Xi Delta - Iowa Wesleyan
Chi Omega - Colby (19th? chapter)
Delta Delta Delta - St Lawrence (6th chapter)
Delta Gamma - Washington (27th chapter)
Delta Phi Epsilon - Teachers Colege NYC (1917-1922)
Delta Zeta - Cornell (1908-1932)
Gamma Phi Beta - Michigan
Kappa Alpha Theta - Indiana
Kappa Delta - Chatham Episcopal Institute (1902-1904)
Kappa Kappa Gamma - St. Mary's School (1871-1974)
Phi Mu - Hollins (1904-1929)
Phi Sigma Sigma - Tufts (1918-1922)
Pi Beta Phi - 2nd chapter is Iowa Alpha, Iowa Wesleyan
Sigma Delta Tau - Pennsylvania
Sigma Kappa - a second chapter was founded alongside Alpha at Colby in 1890 or 1891, later merged with Alpha
Sigma Sigma Sigma - Lewisburg Female (1903-1908)
Theta Phi Alpha - Illinois (1919-1953)
Zeta Tau Alpha - Richmond Women's (1902-1903)

ETA - if someone 'called' Beta and I didn't notice, my apologies.

Chapters

I think this is a great thread...however, I already see how this is going to play out. Someone did the Beta chapters and when I looked at the listing for Sigma Delta Tau, it indicated our Beta chapter at the University of Pennsylvania was inactive. It was reactivated several years ago. I'm sure this will happen with other chapters of not only my sorority but others as well.

My suggestion is that a designated person from each sorority submit her accurate list of chapters both active and inactive along with the schools and dates founded. I can copy mine from our website and double check it in my current issue of our magazine, The Torch, which arrived the other day. Otherwise this will turn out to be a mass of misinformation.

I will volunteer to do Sigma Delta Tau. Any other volunteers? I think everything should be coordinated by our esteemed leader of this thread, Alpha Frog.

I specifically said my info was from 1977, so I readily admit there could be a LOT of variances from what I posted and the actual info. So I can do one of two things - I can remove the post on the chance that the info is wrong, or I can update it if people correct me.

Just PM me or reply specifically to the thread with exact changes that should be made and I am happy to make them. Paula, I couldn't tell from your National site when Beta was rechartered, so I just removed the dates entirely.

Meh, I thought the idea was fun.

Let's go by chapter, and list the university where all 26 NPCs have that chapter. (Yes, I realize not ever group has a chapter for every letter-deal with it.) Since I *think* it's most common, let's go Alpha-Omega, then Alpha Alpha, Alpha Beta, Alpha Gamma, etc then Beta Alpha, Beta Beta, Beta Gamma - well, you get it.

Alpha (Founding) Chapters
Delta Gamma - Lewis School for Girls
While you are right in that this was Delta Gamma's first ever chapter, its designation was actually "Psi". One of my wise DGs on this board told me that chapter denoted as "Alpha" was at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, 1882-1908. I should also mention that Psi has been used more than once, so you will sometimes see the Psi-II designation for when the Psi name was used again (i.e. recycled), but at a different campus.

The DG chapter designated as "Beta" is at University of Washington in Seattle, WA, but our 2nd ever chapter was actually elsewhere (and I am not sure where it was). I am looking in my NM Education Materials, but it doesn't apparently to be explicitly stated as to which was Chapter #2. Suffice it to say that in the earliest days of DG, they didn't really follow the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, etc. ordered naming convention. That came later on.

Changed.

I think once we get a little ways into this, we can paste a few posts together (or, I can edit the OP) to make the info more accessible. Or, we could start a new thread with just the actual list and no chit-chat.

Upsilon Lambda - wow!!! ZTA just chartered Kappa Omega! How many chapters are active right now though? Just curious

And I'm with Nittany, I'm interested but I don't think I'll be able to contribue much here. I'll definitely keep checking in though!
