ok i'll bite.
There is no straight answer. I am in a sorority and no I wasn't raped, and it didn't happen on my campus. But my campus doesn't speak for every other one. You need to do some RESEARCH and find out for yourself. Coming to a website might not get you the answer you want.

In terms of the personal thoughts, sure, but Jon1856 provides some links that go beyond just personal response.

On a serious note, I took a course called "the college student" last semester. Our textbook showed all kinds of research on different groups of college students. According to the research, fraternity men are more likely to support traditional gender roles than non-greek men. However, it did not say anything about rape. There isn't any research about this out there, that I know of.

i don't speak from personal experience, but even before i was greek i definitely noticed a trend on my campus that one particular fraternity (who will remain unamed) had a bad history of taking advantage of girls at bars. as in, people would tell me, "oh, watch out for those guys, if they offer you a ride home, don't take it" and the such. i never heard anything about direct rape, but i'm sure there were a lot of half-way consentual acts that were definitely a source of shame for girls nieve enough to let it happen. **disclaimer: i don't want it to sound like i blame the girls for "letting" it happen. but there's a big difference in being forced to do something and allowing yoursef to be taken advantage of when you're in right enough mind to know better but "don't care" because you're "tipsy". it's the line between rape and a horrible descision as far as i'm concerned. that's defintely JUST my opinion though.** anyway, i've DEFINITELY never heard anything about covering it up for the sake of your sorority's reputation. that's just disgusting and if i saw it happen i don't think i'd be active on my campus anymore.

i'm pretty sure he's referring to the male as dominant; the bread-winner and "boss" of the house. when you think traditional gender roles, think of the mom and dad from leave it to beaver. that should give you a decent indication.

Jelly --
You should think your question through. How would we even begin to be able to answer it? You're asking for generalized conclusions based on what? There's always a chance bad things will happen to you. The best thing you can do is be safe.
Most sororities will probably go over safe party practices with members on a fairly regular basis. If you rush, just pay attention there. You'll never be 100% safe unless you just stay at home and play World of Warcraft all day in lieu of rushing.
But then there is always the chance of one of those home invasion guys... So really, you're never safe.
There.. feel better?

Hey man do not knock world of warcraft. People get raped through that game too! There are real people behind those characters and when they leave their basements they brush off the cheeto crumbs, get on planes and go rape other players IRL.

Yeah.. and at any rate, I was going to say something funny, but then I remembered how unfunny rape is.
But rape and WoW? That's kind of funnny.

The people who play that game are scary and I say this as a player. Of course I log in about once a week so I barely even count. But holy shit, people will take sick days to play WoW. People meet in-game and get married IRL. It is really scary.
