Just stopped through to see what's going on.
I think this is an excellent discussion. I happen to like Bryant Gumbel (to a certain extent). I liked him back when he was the butt of comedians' jokes and the posterboy for Uncle Tomism (I made up that word). The reasons behind the ridicule were based on his speech and his demeanor. At that time, he WAS married to the black woman, but caught slack b/c he defied stereotypes of how WE should act and speak.
Now, I think he is fitting, very well, into the stereotype: the stereotype that makes blacks (mainly black men)feel as if they are not truly successful until they can assimilate and (if they're lucky) marry a white woman. The white woman is the prize. I don't want to get off into a discussion of interracial couples, because replies on this topic will be based on PERSONAL experiences "I married a white man/woman, and I haven't left my people..." I'm speaking more on GENERAL terms.
Bryant's comments were on point...but sometimes when someone is viewed as an outsider, they're constructive criticism is met with great scrutiny. I think that Ms. Johnson should not have made her comments to him public...the last thing we need is for two "prominent" blacks to "bicker" in public. Ms. Johnson should look closely at Bryant's comment and see where there may be room for change at Ebony/Jet.
Sorry for the long post...had to add my $19.13!
