I think Ashlee has actual talent. I don't think she presents herself well in public, but she can actually sing. I was a music major - vocal empasis - in college, and I recognize that she has technique. I believe that it's unfortunate that she's Jessica's sister and gets labeled as "She only made it because her sister did".

Also, I love the people who are like, "It's too bad Jessica got all the talent in the family." I don't know that much about singing, but it's obvious that Jessica forces her vibrato like crazy, which is not good technique.
My friend I discussed it and realized that at this point, Jessica and Ashlee both have about the same amount of hits, and Ashlee's accomplished it in a much shorter time period than Jessica. I'm not sure if that's funny or scary.
Anyway, I don't particularly like either one's music, but I think that in terms of personality, Ashlee's image is just more inherently relatable. We don't relate to the perfect virginal golden girl airhead whose biggest problems is that her boobs are too big. We relate to the younger sister who feels like she's always been in the other one's shadow, who's always screwing up a little bit (or a lot). I agree that Ashlee would never have had the success she did without Jessica, but it's not just because Jessica made it into the music business first -- it's because without Jessica's "perfect" image to play off, people would never have liked Ashlee. Her insecurities and screw-ups and the inevitable comparisons between the two sisters are what appealed to a lot of people.
