Re: OU Triangle stands up for rights

The OU chapter of Triangle has refused to submit to unlimited "inspections" by campus police (seeking alcohol violations), and has been kicked off campus and out of the IFC.

Hope they have a lawyer.
Makes me wonder if they have a warrant to enter a residence and search it. Do they also search the dorms/apartments of on campus residences also?

Actually, the point is that BOTH are USC -- depending on where you live. That's why it's important to use words instead of initials.

If we go by your logic, Oklahoma wouldn't be OU because Ohio University was chartered in 1804 and Oklahoma didn't come along until the 1870's. While I like to poke a little fun at my friends in Norman (and our son who is a senior there), BOTH schools are OU -- again depending on your geographic outlook and where your were born or live.

We went through the same legal silliness when Ohio State tried to stop Ohio Univeristy from using "Ohio" by itself. That even got covered on the TODAY Show. In fact Matt Lauer tagged out the package by picking up his Ohio University coffee mug when he threw to a station break. Matt went to OU, you know. The one in Ohio. Thankfully, the presidents of the two schools took it out of the lawyers (and athletic department's hands -- there's a lot of money in school sports clothing, you know) and settled out of court. That's one of the reasons that on ESPN and other sports nets, Ohio U is called Ohio and OSU is Ohio State.

Miami University at Oxford, Ohio was chartered (1811, I think) before the Miami at Coral Gables (chartered in 1925 according to their website), so would that mean that "Miami" can only mean the one in Ohio?

Fact is that where we live (in the West), USC (or sometimes just SC) is the University of Southern California in most peoples minds.

I totally get what you're saying DA. But the two USCs keep going to court over the same thing on who's the real USC. That's been going on for years. But when most people think of USC, it's Southern Cal. Here, we say USC, it's South Carolina and the other USC is Southern Cal.

All the houses on 'South Greek' (the section of Greek houses south of Lindsey Street) are on University-owned land, though the structures themselves are owned by the respective fraternity and sorority alumni/ae associations.

DA... the younger OU was chartered in 1890.

The University doesn't own that land anymore, according to the Norman zoning maps. They are private property.

And I'm not an idiot, I know where South Greek is. However, Triangle just got their house, and it's kinda on North Greek.

However, regardless of who owns the land, there should be a land lease, and if the structure is owned by the Alumae associations or the Housing Association (in the case of AGD) the university has no right ot demand entry.

That's the link to the Cleveland County Assessor site. I have no idea what the Triangle House's address is, but one of y'all may. You can go there, plug it into the search, and it'll tell you who's name is on the title.

Not at all. Look at the thread in Greek Life about the ISU sorority woman who was killed in a hit and run accident.

Which ISU?

There was a thread in which a Kent State (KSU) woman was killed. It worried a few people from Kansas State (KSU) when they read it.

It simply isn't good communication -- and in the worst case can worry people.

Not meaning you, k*... I'm 'explainifying' that term to those GCer's who don't go to OU. I stand corrected on the zoning, though.

Ok, sorry.

It's really frustrating, though, the dorms aren't even inspected, but the greek houses are.

No biggie... I guess the pendulum's swung hard against OU's Greek community right now. Not to mention the fact that their housing office staff is known to be virulently anti-Greek (it was when I was an undergrad over 20 years ago).

Question. Aren't their RA's on each floor section of the dorms who are supposed to enforce University rules? Does that offset the need for police in these specific cases?

They're supposed to... in exchange for free room and board in the dorms, they must sell their souls to the dark side...

Back in my day, we weren't worried so much for our floor's RA, but more for the 'duty RA' who was on call and roamed the dorm, usually backed up with an OUPD student assistant 'gendarme'. Most times they were slapping people for noise citations, though.

Oregon goes by U of O
Oregon State goes by OSU, but more often by Oregon State.
