I know it's uncommon in this country but in the history of the world, this is not so wild. It's only eight years. Based on the parents' consent to allow marriage, I'd be disappointed if he gets charged and locked up when he could be out supporting his child.

Why not let him be and order heavy duty counseling?

el oh el

In the history of the world, retaining workers by force and not compensating them for the work is also commonplace. I mean, in history - only in the last century or so have we tried to eradicate it, and unsuccessfully I might add.

Heh heh. No. They married guys, although I'm not sure how old the guys were. Older, though, I'm pretty sure.

I know she might have thought that her daughter would need someone to help her out with the baby and that her unborn grandchild should have a father, but do you really want your teenage daughter to be married to a pedophile and do you really want your grandchild to be raised by a pedophile. I just don't understand how she could have seen this guy for what he is and still allow him to marry her daughter. If the parents had just been dense and blind to the whole thing, I might understand. But if Crystal's mother really did say those things and really did file a restaining order, then why the hell did she give them her permission to get married.
I have a feeling that daughter threw a fit, cussed the mother out, threw things, etc. and all mom wanted was for there to be peace, daughter to be gone, and perhaps she wouldn't have to raise her grandchild either... This move satisfied these things.

Most people don't think that far into the future.

From the ABC news:

Matthew Koso said through tears. "Right now there isn't anything that I love more than my wife and my daughter."

Right now??? is that kind of like in high school where right now I love my boyfriend but tomorrow I think I love that other guy. I think that's a sign that he knows this is a temporory thing...

Her mother said "What people don't realize, too, is that Matt is not emotionally 22. He's not mature like other young men his age are, so he is really at the same level of maturity as Crystal even though there are those years between them."

All the more reason NOT to let your daughter marry the guy...

In Nebraska, sex between an adult and a person younger than 16 is considered statutory rape, whether the couple is married or not.

So if you're 15 and married in Nebraska, you don't have to fake a headache, you can just threaten to send him to jail if you're not in the mood...

I think every member of the families on both sides should be sent to fight the war in Iraq.

Update.

A Falls City man sentenced for sexual assault after impregnating and then marrying a now 15-year-old girl was expected to be released from prison on Saturday.

Matthew Koso, 24, has served 15 months of his 18- to 30-month sentence for first-degree sexual assault, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

So what's the over/under on how long the marriage will last?

I give it <12 months from the time he's sprung from prison.

(And it goes without saying that the poor kid is going to be royally screwed up...)

*sigh...

since i have a daughter, i will say this...if she got knocked up by another 13 year old, it would be less wrong. it would be an unfortunate case of children doing adult things, and i dont even know if i would press charges unless it was a rape or assault.

at 22, you have no business with anyone under the age of 18. Point blank. you fell in love with a 17 year old? you better love her with your hands off until she's legal.

Would you really have any basis to press charges in any other circumstance than rape or assault?

I jive with your sentiment, but doesn't the 18 thing seem kind of . . . arbitrary? What's the difference between 17 and 18? I realize that's a somewhat derivative argument, but nothing really changes on the 18th birthday - so the "hands off until she's legal" makes sense legally, but not when combined with "you have no business with a 17 year old."

I guess, more simply, this would really also mean a 23 year old would have no business with an 18 year old - right?

It's true that the age of majority or consent is arbitrary, but so is every "milestone" age, 16, 18, 21. They're just the best guess that the legislature can make to protect people. Because there ARE some 14 year olds who are incredibly mature, could be allowed to have a beer at dinner and wouldn't get trashed. But there are far more who are not.

Follow the law. If you're old enough to be breaking it by having sex with a minor, you're old enough to keep your pants on until the age of consent.
