It wasnt that black folk didnt take care of her in her later years. The rub is that neither black folk or white folk took care of her.

Someone should have, regardless of their color.

Truely a shame.

I learned in my Theories of Persuasion class (which should have been called "The History of Civil Rights") that she didn't just make the decision to not give her seat up on her own. She was part of an organization and it was a sort of planned thing. He told us this was the part of Rosa Parks history that we are not taught. None of the African American students in the class said anything and or silently reacted so I took this is true (plus the fact that I couldn't see our professor teaching us a lie this big).

There is a story, that I don't think Mrs. Parks ever confirmed, that basically said the same thing. The story also goes that a 15 year old unmarried pregnant girl did the same thing (refused to give up her seat) a few days/week earlier, but given her "situation" she was not appropriate to be the face of the bus boycott. Mrs. Parks was a much better face. Regardless, what she did too remarkable courage and she should be remembered as a hero.

Agreed. I think we did learn about the 15 year old too. It sounds familiar.

The news here just talked about all the viewings there will be. She is definitely getting a great goodbye. She just seems like such a modest woman, and if you can't respect her for what she has done for history, you have to respect her modesty.

Has there ever been discussion on who the white man was who insisted she give him her seat?

I would love to know his name, background, comments now.

You could probably throw a rock in Mongomery today and if you hit a white male age 65 or above, he could have been in the same situation. He, by asking her to move, and the bus driver by insisting on it then calling the police, was doing nothing unusual, she was.

On a related topic, a white woman who now lives in the Atlanta area said she was on the bus that day and offered to give Mrs. Parks her seat, but the bus driver would not let her. She was on the local news. I'll see if I can find the link

I was hoping to go see the horse drawn carriage processional as they went from the African American museum to the church, but they changed the time line and it will be going by my workplace around 6:15-6:30 am, so I won't be able to go. I'm disappointed. I imagine they had to change it so they weren't going through downtown during rush hour, but I wish they'd made it later instead of earlier.

The celebration started EARLY this morning and is STILL going on. I wonder if these people breaked for food or anything.

Jesse Jackson's daughter just sang. I had to change the channel because my ears were almost bleeding from listening to her, and my eyes were hurting from watching her sing. She looks angry.

Not to be of any disrespect, but I don't think it's necessary for 2, 4, and 7 to all be broadcasting. I was really looking forward to watching my shows... I know that's not more important than history, but there's nothing else on any other channels and it's kinda like 9-11.... you just gota stop watching at some point and there really aren't many options.

The classic "Catch 22" for TV stations who build their reputation around News.

You get panned by the press and audience when you pre-empt regular programs, and by the same if you don't.

Most will always err on the side of carrying the news coverage.

(And actually, the local affilliate may not have a choice. If that's what the network is sending, that's what they have available to air)

Was this just local coverage? I wasn't aware of a national broadcast for her funeral.

My shows... lol. You sound like my mom. She always talks about 'her shows'. My grandmother used to refer to them as her 'stories'. For them, they were referign to their soaps.

CNN kept bouncing back and forth to it. Their coverage was pretty good. If a prominent speaker or singer came to the altar, then CNN went back to it. (Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, Aretha Franklin... you know, all the important black folk, lol)

I didnt catch FOX's coverage. I'd put a hot poker in my eye first.

I was a little shocked to turn on the radio on the way home from work to listen to the traffic reports and find that the funeral was still going on. What time did it end? For some reason, I thought the timeline I had read said that it would be from 11 am -2 pm.

Oh, I'm so used to national coverage I didn't really think of that. You're probably right. Having worked at Channel 2 in Detroit many years ago (when it was CBS, not FOX) I tend to think of it as a network affiliate before I think of the local angle.

Since the funeral was in Detroit, my comments still apply, with the exception of the last one about having no alternative.

At 6pm they started the procession to the cemetary. Crazy long funeral! There were so many people that wanted to speak so it went a lil later than expected.
