My mom went to Mount Allison back in the day (late 70s and early 80s) and remembers university-wide activities for first years that involved getting hosed down, mud, and other mandatory, university-sanctioned activities. She's quite timid, so she definitly considered that hazing.
The pictures in question are from a residence famous on campus for the wild goings-on. Depending on who you ask, it's amazing or an absolute pain. Mostly the men's floors (and men's varsity teams) participate in the extremes, women's floors tend to be more subtle.
Since I gather it's optional, I wouldn't care so much if fraternities and sororities didn't get such a bad rep from their supposed hazing, none of which occurs in any panhellenic group, period, while the campus residences get away with so much. Oh well, the people who live there seem to like it, and there are other residences on campus that offer a "quieter" environment.
