Democrats will be a long time waiting for the White House again if they don't find a way to put at least parts of the South back in play. They cannot continue to cede a 70-75 electoral college vote "head start" to the Republicans and expect to win. They need to develop/cultivate moderates state politicians from some of the at least upper southern-tiered states (Tenn., W. Va., KY).
Meanwhile, if some reports are to be believed, Republicans are making in-roads in California (but I'll let Steeltrap, our intrepid West Coast reporter holla about that.

)
Like it or not, the nation is center/right in its national electoral politics.
