Gamma Phi Beta - 7: Midwestern State, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, Texas Wesleyan, Texas A&M
Alpha Omicron Pi - 3: Texas State, Texas Woman's, UT-San Antonio
Phi Mu - 4: Houston Baptist, Tarleton State, U of Houston, UT-San Antonio
Alpha Gamma Delta - 4: Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas Woman's, UT-Dallas, Tarleton State
Alpha Sigma Alpha - 2: UT-San Antonio, U of the Incarnate Word
Sigma Kappa - 4: Angelo State, Midwestern State, Texas Christian, UT-San Antonio
Sigma Sigma Sigma - 3: St. Mary's, Texas Woman's, Sam Houston State
Alpha Sigma Tau - 1: St Mary's, another one?
Phi Sigma Sigma - none?
Delta Phi Epsilon - none? UIW?
Theta Phi Alpha - none?
This criteria would put Delta Zeta and Gamma Phi Beta in "the lead" with Alpha Omicron Pi close behind along with Phi Mu, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Tau. But, again, this is only one factor....

Just a few slight corrections:
Delta Zeta @ U of North Texas closed a few years back.. I think around 2000? I'm not exactly sure, but unfortunately they are no longer on our campus.
Delta Phi Epsilon has a chapter @ Texas A&M University Kingsville in addition to UIW
Theta Phi Alpha also has a chapter @ Texas A&M University Kingsville.
You're right on the money when you mentioned UNT as being one of the aspiring "flagship" schools. I believe the Panhellenic council there is hoping to expand soon, but I'm not sure when. GC'er Lyrica9 would probably have more info on that. The sorority row is BEAUTIFUL! Last I heard the school administration is looking to do a lot of "branding" type things to get UNT's name out there in the mind's of future college students.

I don't know if this would hold any weight in determining which chapters would be most likely to colonize/recolonize... but what importance is there the amount of inactive chapters an organization has nationally?
Let's say XYZ and ABC are both trying to colonize/recolonize at GC University... haha. Let's say XYZ has 150 chapters with 120 of those still active. And ABC has 250 chapters with 130 of those still active. Even though ABC could still be larger nationally, many chapters have closed... whereas XYZ may be smaller, but more successful in its colonizations. Would the latter be favored to colonize? Are things like this even considered when it comes to inviting an organization to colonize?
This is in NO way meant to knock any of the organizations we're speaking about or anything... it has absolutely nothing to do with any of them ... I was just wondering if this was a factor!!

I haven't been involved in this sort of thing in a long time, but I would think that wouldn't be a factor in itself, really...UNLESS that org had recently had several closings or unsuccessful colonies...things that evidence some instability that might make it harder for them to be successful. But then, I can't think of any group that really fits that mold more than any other....
I know DZ got hit pretty hard in the 70's w/chapter closings (including our Alpha Tau chapter @ UT), and it really shows in our active v. inactive chapter numbers. But I don't think that would be relevant to our ability to colonize now (see UF, Wake Forest, Clemson, Northridge, Arizona in recent years which have been quite successful b/c our expansion team ROCKS). Same goes for other orgs in the same situation.
I agree wholeheartedly that name recognition in Texas would be key to the success of any colony @ UT.
....And I might add that I would give my first born daughter to have DZ back at UT (if only so she could pledge there!!!). And I am only half-joking.....

recolonizing at UT Austin
Thanks for everyone's research on this!
I am thinking about moving to Austin to go to grad school- I love the city- and with such a strong greek community, I wondered why there wasn't a Gamma Phi Beta chapter there. I would be so happy to see the Alpha Zeta chapter recolonized, but I guess it's not up to me! I would love to have collegiate sisters in Austin, if/when I move there.

GPB at Tech has been closed for a while now.
I was a facilitator at recruitment boot camp this summer and met two panhellenic officers from Tech. we talked about expansion there and they said the chapters and the alums, for the most part, are very against expansion. i encouraged them to at least talk about it and set a plan to add another chapter in 5 years. who knows if that will actually happen. it was a big stressor for those women (just talking about even the possibility of expansion talks with the chapters). they said some chapters are not at total and would never go for it, some are having internal troubles, etc. there is much more to talk about when it comes to the troubles, but i'm way too tired to start.
ETA: there would be hundreds of happy alums if we ever re-opened at UT! There is an alum chapter and quite a few alums in my chapter went to UT.
Edited again: it was Tech, not UT. although there was a panhel officer from UT there too and i just got confused!
