It seems like it comes from the bias against homosexuality that exists in society. There are people who don't agree with homosexuality or don't want someone who is gay in their org. It's all a matter of how people want their organization perceived.
I don't see the big deal - if someone's a good fit for the chapter, it didn't matter to me whether they were straight, gay or otherwise.
ChaosDST - I think this is something that's becoming a bigger and bigger issue in the Greek world, and thus on GC. I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this in the past.

To me, trying to prevent having gays in a GLO is like trying to prevent a disabled person from joining. There should be no discrimination. However, I live in CA, specifically, in an area witha large concentration of gays so I'm definitely liberal about it. One of our new members is deaf but she's still a sister.
I guess I just don't understand what the fuss is all about.

It would be great to leave it at that. But we won't of course.

I really think it is mostly an issue for fraternities, though. Some fraternities have an issue more than others.

So what is the solution? Ask people...'hey, are you gay?" when they're going through intake/recruitment? And I'm bothered by the fact that so many organizations (which is part of the reason we have such diversity in the NPC, NPHC, NIC, etc) were founded out of discrimination of their founders...only to have members discriminating against other "subcultures". It just seems counterproductive to the aims of our organizations. And I'm bothered by the emphasis placed on the "image" of our organizations. Whereas image can be influenced by the actions of the members (hazing, drinking, or being academic, philanthropic)...the percieved image that we worry about is, pardon the phrase, bullshit.

Images are influenced and transmitted in all sorts of ways. It is a matter of preference which images hold more weight than others.
