I would kill for a nice one bedroom in the Boston area for 800-900 a month.

As would I! My one bedroom is so much more than that!

I pay $850/month for a one-bedroom w/utilities and parking included. NW side, near the Central Street shopping district.

I feel you--one of my friends lives in a wonderful studio in Brookline and it's 795 base price without her utilities That's incredibly pricey in my book (then again, I lived in a 4 bedroom shithole in Allston with 6 others and paid $365 a month just on rent alone when I only made $162 a week)...Boston is much more expensive to live in than Chicago--the point I was making is that you shouldn't have to pay that much in the Chicago suburbs when living in the city of Chicago is cheaper than that.

Quite honestly, very few people work and live in the same city. Chicago is a big commuter city. People go in, people go out. The public transportation system is excellent, though. If I still lived there, I'd probably take the train into the city if that was where I worked.

I wouldn't be surprised if the average rent for a one-bedroom was close to 800 or 900 a month. And that's in a suburb. I pay that right now with utilities already included--and I live in a priciest area of St. Louis, which is a medium-sized city; not a suburb. The area by the high school isn't great, no...but there are also few apartments near the high school--it's mostly lower income single family homes that start around 80,000-200,000. You could buy a small condo for that kind of money downtown. I grew up in Southeast Evanston (about 6-8 blocks south of Northwestern and 4 from the lake) and most of the houses near my parents sell for 750,000 (base price--the one down the street is on the market for over 2.8 million)...and the condos near us start at 500,000. That's pricey in my book...especially right out of college or as a young professional. Granted, I'm just a law student who will never be able to afford to live in Evanston until I'm married (since I do public interest work...a $30,000 a year paycheck won't really get me a nice place in Evanston) and who has lived in Boston on an Americorps stipend--so I'm used to being 'poor'...I'm trying to be realistic here...I wouldn't tell anyone that living in Evanston is cheap if they can't pay at least 700 a month in rent.
the price on one bedroom apartments in Evanston is the same price as one bedroom apartments in Raleigh (where i live now). so yeah its not much of a difference in that area. but then again i've also lived in wilmington, nc where my mortgage payments were less than $600 for a 2 bedroom townhouse in the nicest area of town. and trust me, i'll be on around the same salary range as you and i know for a fact that an apartment is going to take up a hefty amount of my salary

c'mon dude, you can definitely have that easily - you'll just make up the difference in paying gas for the commute from Providence or Nashua.

Of course, you could always carpool w/ PJ
