I made the off-hand remark to a co-worker one day that I didn't care if I ever got married or not. It didn't matter to me. He (yes, I said HE) said, "well, I guess you'll just end up a bitter old woman with a bunch of cats." I just said, "yea, well, they better be hairless because I'd be in dire straights if they weren't. BTW, I'm allergic to cats."

Isn't it the point of that article....

It's written by a bunch of bitter old women....and it seems that a lot of bitter young women have posted about it.

eeek. That's a nasty thing to say. What, like he's a better person because he wants to get married?

And Coramoor, these women aren't bitter-- it's just a very strong reality that women are pressured into societal roles that *still* hold a second-rate status. It's sad that when women break from the norm that we look down upon them for some reason. Men don't get that pressure as much. Unless you've got a serious fortune or a crown, it's more acceptable to not be married and never have children. Expressing frustration with this societal catch 22 isn't bitterness.

I don't think that's true, especially depending on the type of communities you live in.

Just remember, when you marry him, make sure he can get you that house on Country Club Drive and that SUV after you have the obligatory baby or two. But be sure to state that you get to keep anything he buys/builds you in the prenup.

And above all, make sure your consecutive husband(s) can do better.

While I do think there is a grain of truth in the article, I don't care too much what people think about my being single. If I meet someone fabulous, that would be great. If I don't, well, hey, I 've gotten along thus far.

I agree with tinydancer in that this article does make a vaild point, society does expect us to couple up but there's no reason to settle for someone who's less than what you deserve. Although I might take bekibug's advice and embark on a career as professional trophy wife.

XOMichelle,

yea it was like a "I'm better than you because I definately want to get married" kind of an attitude he got when he said it. He was arrogant anyways and he annoyed me beyond belief. I didn't let him know that he annoyed me but I usually got my point across when I wanted him to leave me alone.

ztawinthropgirl,

boo coworker! It's far better for you to make up your own mind and be comfortable. :-) Who is he to say what makes YOUR life meaningful?

Now that is about the most funniest thing I have read on this subject?

And probably the most accurate...

i wouldn't say that i am bitter bc i am not married. i refuse to settle for an "ok" relationship. i would rather wait for a "great" one. honestly, i think this time of being alone has been good for me. at some points in our lives, we will be alone (whether our partner dies or we get divorced). i am glad that i know now that i can live by myself and take care of myself!

What's sad is their kids almost always follow the same path, so eventually you really can't have any good conversations in public because you're talking about someone's used-to-be-sister who's now the 4th-cousin-by-marriage-twice-removed. It's confusing and IMO trashy. Honestly, when you're in a nursing home with 100 other people that can't cart themselves to the bathroom, who's gonna care how much your car cost back when you could still see to drive? And your kids are going to have moved into your house and ruined it anyway, not to mention pawned your grandma's jewelry to pay for something like their kids' cheerleading uniforms. Do bear in mind, sentimental value of your grandma's engagement ring holds no candle to having the latest will-never-be-in-style-again accessories right now. After all, it's all about keeping up appearances.

This is coming from a never-married/won't-be-married-for-a-while person still in college, but really people, marriage is something that you don't play around with. Either do it because you and your SO are ready for that and want to and KNOW you can make it work or don't do it.

ok, so this thread just makes me think of the conversation with my mother this afternoon:

mom: can you come by and let the dogs outside on sunday....me and your dad are going to the couple's shower on sunday
me: <freaking out> couple's shower????.....tammy's shower (my sister)?!?!?!?! that's a couple's shower?!?! i was supposed to go to that!!!! since when did you have to bring a DATE to these things!?!?!?
mom:..........................couple's shower......as in for the wedding couple..................

see....the pressure is always on to have a date.....even when you're not even supposed to have one.
