(sorry for sounding bitchy, but this is a sore subject for me right now)

... yeah but also how could you get their letters back? we have that problem.. someone dissafilliates for not paying dues, then goes around wearing letters, they aren't bound by the constitution!? so how do you handle that?? ; )

You know as much as Sapphire and I were joking that's pretty much all you can do. Ask them nicely but in the end it comes down to whether they're feeling angry towards the org or not. I've seen sisters wear their letters after being dissaffiliated for not paying dues and it bothered me at first but now *shrugs* I sort of don't care. They aren't being disrespectful in my opinion, a sorority is expensive and who knows what happened to make them unable to pay. Once a Phi Sigma SIgma always a Phi Sigma Sigma.
Try talking to her and reasoning, if it doesn't work out and get you the letters back then nothing will and aside from doing something drastic and not really advisable nothing will.

I totally understand where you are coming from. Everyone has their own opinion on the situation about dissafilliating sisters wearing letters...
my opinion is, they are NO longer a part of Phi Sigma Sigma, so they do not have the RIGHT to wear letters. Once a Phi Sigma Sigma, Always a Phi Sigma Sigma is very true, but not if they are dissafiliated. It also depends on the situation. If a sister told everyone in your university all our secrets, would you still think they should have Phi Sig priveledges... I don't think so!!
that's my 2 cents! ; )

I didn't say they had Phi Sig privileges but simply make a point that it will be difficult to get the letters back unless the sister is feeling charitable about hte way in which she left the organization, which most won't because they will believe as i said that they still should be allowed to wear them.
Bottom line, unless she volunteers up the letters or you can reason with her into giving them back there isn't much at all you can do.
That's why I no longer really care when I see that one sister wearing them, every other greek in the ocmmunity knows she shouldn't and comments to her about how wrong it is etc. so eventually she'll either stop wearing them and give them back or just be too scared to wear them on campus.

I suggest offering them to auction off all their "phi sig crap" to the chapter, having active sisters buy it and pay them back. Alot of people don't want to give it back because "they paid for it" so auction it off for them and give them the money (or negotiate with them to maybe donate it to NKF or something) at least this way they don't feel like they wasted the money, or whatever. Also AT LEAST get back their badge THAT DOESN"T BELONG TO THEM. !!!! IMO do (almost) anything to get that sphinx back. They SHOULDN'T HAVE IT.

ok, sorry about the jokes. we were just trying to have some fun.
on a more serious note, the toughest thing i ever had to do as vice archon was to go pick up all the paraphanilia from my two closest friends who dissaffliated from our chapter. i asked for all the official stuff like the badge, n.m. pin, etc. and then asked for everything else phi sig related including their chapter letters, paddles, lavaliers, license plate covers - EVERYTHING! i knew everything they owned that was phi sig, so they knew they couldn't (and didn't want to) keep it. they told me there were some specific items they wanted to give to certain sisters (ie. their braclets, or tshirts) but everything else they just gave up.
i understand that this doesn't happen everytime - and even though it was really hard - it might be necessary to actually go up to the girl once she dissaffliates and get everything from her then.
i don't believe that the whole, "once a phi sig, always a phi sig" applies once the membership has been voided - and thus, anyone who dissaffliated shouldn't own anything having to do with phi sig.

I totally agree with you. We have some former sisters who disaffiliated and still come to alumnae stuff, which, whatever, they're still friends with active alums, but when they get in "alumnae" pictures I get upset. So they couldn't afford it, sorry, but if you quit you are no longer a Phi Sig. That's like going back to where you used to work to be in their office photo. Doesn't make much sense.

Jess and Beth I agree.
initiation does a very clear job of explaining ONCE A PHI SIG ALWAYS A PHI SIG. and it doesnt' include letting people who haven't lived up to their end get the benifits being a member can offer.
