um, i think that, if you'll check a little deeper, the majority of 'young' republicans (under 30) are economic conservatives (also read this as "educated") and social moderates (read this as "not uneducated"). The religious right dictates platforming, but policymaking can surely be influenced by this young bloc. In fact, I'd suggest for you that as soon as the under-30 crowd, such as myself, becomes the primary donating body (3-4 elections down the road, sure, but still), you'll see a dramatic shift in Republican "theology" (or most likely, lack thereof).
I'm a registered Republican who would love to see full support for gay marriage rights. I will continue to send letters as I find time, b/c I feel like we shape the party - not the decaying bodies of evangelical assholes in mississippi.
