Well, I was there at the beginning of MTV and I miss it being like that. We would just sit and watch for hours on end and really not see a lot of repeats. I can't even watch it now. Luckily, I get VH1 Classic and I can see some of the good old stuff.

by constantly trying to reinvent itself, mtv has watered down the message and often comes across as just confused.

MTV really doesn't have a programming problem. They don't even have an audience problem. They have changed their target audience from 18-24 music lovers to 14-19 (no backup data but it's pretty obvious), and those of us who grew up to worship MTV are seriously pissed.

Remember that edgy, in your face, kick ass MTV? Well I do too; that was still when the Real World cast twenty-somethings who had more life's ambition than winding up puking and having sex in a hot tub. (Think RW San Francisco...wasn't it Judd??? or someone who wanted to be a cartoonist, if I remember Pam had a career too...shit even Rachel wanted to work on some govt. campaign...)I dare you to watch RW now and even know what major some of those people are, if they go to school.

Look at the faces in TRL's audience- all high schoolers. Lindsay Lohan/Hilary Duff/Ashlee Simpson are the teens these people idolize. And I don't think they'll ever really change, b/c teens spend money like there's no tomorrow, b/c its not theirs.

I'm pissy b/c I want MY MTV (it was ours in the first place, dammit!!!) and I'm never getting it back.

They don't really play any music I like on MTV anymore. I like M2 for a while but now it's getting worse too. I guess I just see it all as pointless...?? I could care less about the teenie-boppers one way or another. I've actually started watching VH1 from time to time.

Yeah, the fangirls (and boys) will trample me I guess.

errr, Lindsey's all right. She was in Mean Girls, right? That was actually somewhat funny. She's my favorite of the bunch. I don't know much about Hillary Duff. Then there's those Olsen twins. One of them is anorexic now. I like all of those stars more than say Britney Spears, if that makes you feel better. She wears too much body grease/glitter. That's creepy.

I was never into the teenie-bopper thing. I was the depressed alt rock chick in high school.

I just think it would be better if MTV did more of a variety of programming...

Can you tell I'm procrastinating writing my thesis?.... yeah..

I like Hilary...but she is on my crap list after seeing the video for her & Hayley's HORRID remake of "Our Lips Are Sealed." And they copied the video too. Oy vey.

The best way I can sum up MTV is that Beavis and Butt-Head would NEVER make it to air nowadays...the artists that the channel pushes the most are the very type of thing they used to make fun of.

When I went to the movies with friends over the weekend one of the guys said a friend had some tapes of the old 120 Minutes shows and we all went "awwwww..." Never in my life did I think I'd miss Kennedy.

I think the change really started when Viacom bought them out...before that it was much more random (good random) - all types of music mixed together, playing Pink Floyd The Wall at 2 AM for no reason, etc. Once Viacom came along they insisted on making "shows." I think they even had to do with Nirvana being pushed and all the hair bands going away. They didn't think the 2 could coexist. They were looking at MTV like it was a radio station. It's supposed to be all kinds of music, not just one...but of course now, it's pretty much no music at all. M2 is getting just as bad. And don't even get me started on VH1.

There's a new channel called Fuse that is supposedly what MTV used to be - I can get some of it from my On Demand but I think you have to watch a while to really get the feel of it. I agree w/ Tinydancer, thank heaven for VH1 Classic.

Does anyone remember THE BOX?? Can't beat people calling in to hear "Gangsta Lean" every half hour.

I just picked up one of my old Rolling Stones last night (from like 1996) and they had an article in about MTV which was kind of what we are talking about. If I'm bored at home this weekend, I'll type it in here.

Or course the original MTV was way before Real World, Road Rules, etc.

It was hours on end of "VJ's" playing music videos.

Damn, that Martha Quinn was cute.
