Well it depends... I mean not generally... but if it's the person next to me in class and something funny happens or we start talking about the homework assignment and it goes on from there.. yeah... or talk to the person waiting behind or in front of you in line for the concert yeah I'll talk to them... as long as there's some kind of commality to talk about then yeah I'll talk but just COMPLETELY randomly.... not generally going to talk to you... and I DEFINITELY don't want to hear your whole life story. If it's like rush and these people are strangers.. but I have a purpose to get to know them (and hence.. some sort of common ground) then yeah I can talk and talk and talk..
I do this sometimes, depending on my mood. You have to read people though. Make eye contact, smile, you can usually tell if they're open to small talk at that point. I try to keep it positive.. no griping or complaining about life. There's enough of that already! But, to make a joke, comment on how great it is that Spring has arrived, etc. is simply being friendly.
i'm constantly talking to random people about random things- especially being in london- if i hear an american accent- i immediately want to know wehre tehy are from... i talk to people in queus- at the supermarket- walking down the street- shopping- wherever- i learn all kinds of things and talk to interesting people- sometimes find a connection between us too- sometimes i get strange looks- and people avoid me (especially here) but at home- its usually recieved quite well....
