Most of your debt will have to do with how much parental support you get relative to your tuition and expenses.

5-10 K?!?!?!?!?! That's INSANE! I freaked out when I hit $1,000!

A lot of kids I knew put expenses on their credit card because they either didn't want to borrow more money in loans or didn't know they could borrow more for expenses if they needed it. The financial aid officers neglect to mention some stuff.

One of my roommates went to school for 5 year---all on student loans---and never graduated. I'm not sure how much she owed when she left school, but I imagine it was a pretty penny.

I graduated with 77,600 in student loans and 5,000 in credit card debt with a grand total of 82,600-woohoo . I have been paying on my loans for 6 years and 3 months and am down to 69,340$. I have paid in over 35,000 though-damn interest.

One of the veterinarians I work with went to the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with over 100,000 in debt in 98-I feel lucky compared to her.

My friend graduated with her MBA from Georgetown last year and is 100,000 in debt. She refused to go to UT Austin which she now realizes was a stupid decision as UT ranks higher than Georgetown and the tuition is a lot more reasonable. She had a very difficult time finding a job and does not make much $$.

I've been out of school since 2000 and I have $3,7866.90 left to pay on mine. My husband, on the other hand, went to an expensive private engineering school so his debt is MUCH greater than mine.

I went from having about $4000 in student loans to about $40,000 in a year. I'm getting my master's in psychology, though, so it will be worth it in the end.
