I used to always want my hair lighter... until my freshman year highlighting disaster.
My aunt used to be a hair dresser or something, but I'm starting to wonder if she had any real training. So I trusted her with the highlight in a box and a cap. Yuck. She pulled too much hair through so I went from dark brown to blonde with dark brown highlights! Yikes! It looked so bad. It looked even worse growing out though! So finally, after putting up with it for a few months, I went and got color in a box and fixed it. I realized that I really do like my hair darker now. I look awful as a blonde.
My latest thing is red highlights. I got them done this summer and they looked alright. I think they will look better when I make them a little more dramatic. I will be sexeh!

Lil Hannah - go to Walmart or the dollar store or something and find the cheapest no-name shampoo you can. Wash your hair with that... Really cheap shampoos usually make the colour fade when you use them. My friend had a similar problem right before her prom, and the shampoo fixed it!

Had I not gone to college, I'm sure I would have ended up a beautician. I love to cut, color, style hair! In fact, my stylist give me crap for doing my own hair, but don't deny that I do a great job.
I use Loreal Ferria. I used Revlon all through college, but I upgraded my $2.50 hair color for a $9 box I'm lucky, but it looks natural. All my DC-area friends and my husband have never known me as the brunette or blond I was before 1991.
I've been strawberry blond since my freshman year of college. Oh, one semester I went really red to piss of a boyfriend. Ah, the pleasures of youth...my husband would die

Hair Color Story from Hell
Me:
"I'm going to dye my hair black. It will uber be cool, and I will wear my emo glasses and look mod."
My hair:
"Muahahah! You now look goth!!"
My *so-called* friend says:
"Oh, not a big deal! Just bleach it! The black will come right out!"
Me:
"Wow, super great idea! I will do that today!" ("Today" being St. Patricks day, when there are parties everywhere)
So I bleach my hair...
My Hair:
"I am going to stay black, and turn brown, red, green, orange, banana yellow, and white! But not in streaks, oh no! In spots! Like a leopard!"
Lady at Sally Hansen Beauty Supply when I pull my hat off:
<her eyes get horribly big, and she can't stop staring at me>
"Holy shit, what on earth did you do?" and then "You are going to have to bleach it completely, but if it gets rubbery, stop immediately, or it will *all fall out*!"
Me:
<in tears> "What in the hell was I thinking?"
My hair:
"Yes, what in the hell were you thinking?"
So, I finally got it all blonde, and put some brown over it. It was never the same. I finally got it professionally done, and it all grew out, after I cut it several times.
**I don't dye my hair anymore!**

^ That is a TRUE horror story.. Yikes
There is only one colour that looks good on me, and that's dark red/auburnish (?sp). Been sporting it for 4 years now, and I NEVER do it at home cause my hair is very prone to damage and major splittage.

I have been coloring my hair for YEARS. My mom used to do it for me, but I do it myself now. During the summer/spring I am a hot blonde and during winter it is usually medium brown. This year though, it is dark brown with red highlights. It looks so good that I can't decide if I want to do it blonde now!! I have asked EVERYONE and can't figure it out. I used to use Feria but lately I have been using the new Loreal Colour Expertise. The one iwth the base color and highlights in one box. I will only use Loreal stuff though.
My horror story-I tried to do the deep burgandy look-yeah, I looked like a leopard who had wine thrown on it! I had literally spots of black, wine red, and purple. plus small patches of blonde wich is what my hair started as. It was terrible, and the president of my company was coming in that day. It sucked.

I am a big chicken now when it comes to dying my own hair. A few years ago, I touched up my own highlights with a kit I bought from the store. I did a really good job and saved myself a lot of money. So, when it came time to touch them up again, I thought it would be no problem. WRONG. My hair takes color really quickly and I left the coloring on my hair too long. I'm not talking minutes, I'm talking 45 seconds at the most. So, when I finally got the foil off my head, my once-honey-blonde highlights had turned a lovely shade of platinum blonde. It wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that it was platinum blonde at the roots and honey blonde at the base of my hair. It was a mess. I had to dye my entire head that color and wait a month or so to have it fixed. (I didn't want my hair to fall out, so that's why I waited).
Here's the worst parts....my skin color isn't flattering with platinum blonde hair. And my sorority formal was the next night....of course, I was the one who organized it and I looked horrible.
I won't be dying my own hair anytime soon.

I looooooooooooove changing the color of my hair. I usually do it at least every 6 months or so. I have never in my life gotten it professionally done but I think I decided I'm going to when my tax check comes in.

Ahh, Henna... I have a horror story with that too!
I convinced my buddy Mike that he would be cool with black hair (apparently I had a thing for black... I dunno). So, we put black henna on over his bleached hair... not a good idea! It turned traffic light green.
I agree than henna kicks any other dye's ass, but don't use it on bleached hair! Unless you are into odd colors...

Interesting... I was thinking of dying my hair bright green...
I'm being half serious here. It would be really fun, and now would be the time to do it, since I'm away from school, sorority, fraternity, any serious job searches, etc...
Or maybe not. I'm probably too chicken to do it.
I used to dye my hair red all the time, though. Most of the time it looked natural, except when I messed it up the first time. My hair was so long and thick that I needed 2 boxes to coat it all, only I didn't realize that until I was putting the dye on my hair. Then I had to go out and get 2 new boxes of dye, and wait about a week until I could dye it again without frying it. In the meantime I had weird patchy brown and red hair -- not the look I was going for.
