Which Mascot Did Your Chapter Use?

Hello All,

In my chapter we justed used the ivy leaf. Now I have heard of using the bunny, and the mouse.

Okay, I know this topic is kinda old, but I have a question...I hope it's not a "forbidden" question for non-members. My mother, who has been an AKA for 20+ years and her sorors don't know anything about the unofficial mascots that are now surfacing. How/when did this "adoption" begin? I'm curious and so is she. If anyone can answer this I'm sure she'd appriciate it as would I.

The bunny. Great Lakes region. Mostly bunnies are used as mascots on the east coast. I recently heard of frogs but never the pink panther. Grad uses Ivy Leaf and others since the chapter is made up with different Sorors from thier under-grad days.

Our chapter basically used the Ivy Leaf; however, many sorors collect frogs. The Pink Panther has been used. I am in the SouthCentral region.

As undergraduates who were guided closely by our graduate chapter, we were discouraged from using symbols other than the ivy leaf, pink tea rose, and pearls. We were quite happy with those, although we knew other sorors used unofficial symbols. I think being a colony trying to charter a chapter at two nongreek schools had a lot to do with us not being influenced by mascots.

I don't know why or how these unofficial symbols got their starts, but I liken it to some of the things I've seen recently among my younger sorors, like making an ivy sign with your hands, doing a serious "lean" while posing for photos, and the whole "Lyle Love" term in reference to the marriage of AKA founder Ethel Hedgeman and APhiA Beta chapter founder George Lyle. These were not done when I was a new soror, but I think have grown out of peoples' desire to "jazz things up" a bit. That's my opinion, anyway.

Maybe if my line sister, Captivator#6, reads the post regarding where and when did the "adoption" of these mascots come from, maybe she will ask her mother for us. Her mother, if I'm not mistaken has been a soror for 20+ years as well and pledged undergrad at a college in Virginia. Her school used the pink panther and she presented Captivator#6 with a huge Pink Panther at our probate show.

So, Babygirl, I know that these mascots have been around for quite sometime now even when your mom joined our sisterhood. But like we said before, the mascots used are unofficial and not recognized by our sorority. The only time my undergrad chapter used the mouse was on posters announcing things like our volunteer tutoring program or a "Sisters Rap" forum for the freshmen ladies. Otherwise, we used the ivy leaf and pearls.

Thanks everyone. Your replies have been helpful. My mother, who crossed at SC State in 1976 ( I don't remember the chapter name), doesn't recall any unofficial "mascots" during that time. Neither she nor any of her sorors heard of the frog until she went to a boule a couple of years ago. Maybe it is because we lived in Germany for many years and now live in Alaska.

One of my co-workers is a soror who crossed at SC State in the mid-70's. I wish I knew which line she was on. I will not see her again until next week to be able to ask her.

made in the NAR our chapter used the bunny . I do have a set of frog candles they are cute to me.

They may have been on the same line! Or a least know each other. You'll have to find out. I also remember that my mom's chapter name is Beta Sigma she was #7 on the '76 line.

Here at my college in The South Atlantic Region we use the Frog and The Ivy Leaf, but I have never seen any nalia with any mascot on it. Other than the Leaf. Which (I think) is nation wide..

My undergrand chapter uses the frog. It has been around as early as the mid 70s.
