I could have graduated from college a semester early, but I didn't, because my health insurance would lapse. So I stayed the full 4 years (the state was paying for it anyway) and stayed a student. I'm getting married this summer so I'll get on FI's plan, which is with a large group.

Nope... it's one of the very few who don't.

Oooh! Maybe I should move to Wisconsin from Florida...it would save me a few grand a year. Any sort of dwelling insurance is super-high here because of hurricanes, so I would save a lot.

Wow. Even Mississippi requires their drivers to have car insurance. I thought they were the last state to not require it.

I am almost positive Wisconsin does require car insurance, otherwise I have no clue why everybody I know except Ginger would be paying for it. I think the difference here that I remember from drivers ed is we only have to have one kind and not both.
ETA: I just checked. Not everybody has to have it, but everybody who does buy it must buy EXTRA insurance against uninsured drivers. Super, huh? It's like punishing responsible people.

I carry UM even though we require insurance by law. SO many people here are uninsured despite the law, or carry absolute minimum coverage, that its just worth it to have UM.
But yeah, that is assy..."since you're going to buy one kind of car insurance, why don't you buy two kinds to make up for the ones who won't buy any!"

It certainly is assy - Wisconsin really has issues with traffic laws for some reason, there were a lot of people who were upset we accepted the new federal limit. But, it will protect me next time Ginger crashes into me on Wisconsin Ave.

By the way, we resolved the situation this morning. I found an agent and company who would write a policy for a reasonable price.
Of course, what made this more difficult was doing it long distance since my agent here in Colorado isn't licensed in Ohio.
For a while it looked like it was going to cost nearly a thousand dollars a year to insure that little studio apartment.
On the other topic, we moved into a duplex in a gated golf course community about a year ago, and had to change insurance companies because our old one won't write policies on "multi-family" dwellings. We had been with this company for years with no claims. They not only lost our home owners policies, but also all of our cars and some term life.

I dunno DTAlum... Something sounds extremely fishy to me. It may be a state thing also because I know for California, they force certain types of insurances or at least alternatives to insure for income property...
For the potential tenets you rent to, what does the nearby school housing recommend? Anything? I would consider looking into getting a lawyer to review your policies... 'Cuz what you are saying sounds foul on the insurance agency's part...

Well, other than Insurance Companies be scum sucking pig out fits, then what?
Yes I own a whole duplex and it is insured as such. If there is a problem, then it is covered, but not the tenets property, that would be covered in thier home owners tht they should have but propbably dont.
Young people do get it right up the rear because of claims especially on vehicle side of it! Claims make up the difference, and they work on stats! Insurance also works on zip codes. Go figure!
Now, who is the Insurance Company to decied if the tenets were Students? Werre there questins to that extint?
Have you checked with the Insurance Commission of the State?
I hate to say it, but i put an ATM in my store bolted down to the floor, in a rear room, with a Alarm system, I put the money in it, and it cost me $50.00 a month for that!
Insurance Companys are far worse than the Mafia!

yall are making me feel really guilty!
If it helps, the day after I'm married I'll be getting it... AND I'll be 25, so my rates should go down drastically!

Nope. Neither my old company or my new one would cover the condo. And agents in both Ohio and here in Colorado worked on it for me.
Bottom line is that, unless there is a state law forcing them to cover something (and in this case, there isn't), they can choose not to write policies for pretty much whatever they want.
