The ladies that use to clean my parents home set rates depending on the size. My parents home is 4,500 square feet. They pay $300 - they come bi-weekly. They wash and buff the the floors, dust, change the sheets - they do not wash the clothes. My parents used a small local company that cleaned during the day when my parents were not home.
When I was on the kick to keep money in the AA community, I encouarged my parents to post a vacancy in our church. They did but my mom did not want someone from our church looking at her dirty home. She hired an elderly AA lady from another church who charged considerly less. However, my parents still pay her the $300. The lady has become like a part of the family. It may take her two days as opposed to the previous one afternoon done by two folk but its ok.

Interesting thread. When I move back to S.D. (don't have a date yet), if I make enough money, I will have someone come and clean. I am a poor cleaner...perhaps that's why I'm single now.

ditto. This thread has me salivating and the idea. My roommate and I have tossed it around, lol. If we both had jobs lined up for after the bar I think we'd actually do it! We both hate cleaning and have a hard time finding the time.
Great, informative thread!

I was thinking of getting someone just to come in on special occasions (out of town visitors, etc.) but I will look in the phone book too to see if we have a Merry Maids so that I can have my apartment cleaned at least every two weeks.

Update
Well they came today while my husband was home. He clearly did not check up on what they did. I was not impressed they are coming back in the morning to get what they missed. It looked I just spent the day cleaning. Only if I was determined I think it would have been better. It feels like someone came in here and gave me an awesome head start. The owner was sweet and told me to make a list of what they did not do. Plus it was three od them. Needless to say I will continue to have a maid but not this service.

Deltabrat, I am now in the LA area and need some assistance. Is the person that you and your mom use open to new clients right now? What services does she provide?
If she does not do laundry (in addition to other various tasks such as organizing closets and/or carpet cleaning), do you know of anyone who does? Will you pm me and let me know how much she charges (if she is taking new clients)?
Does anyone else know of a trustworthy person that does a good job in the LA area? I'm in Culver City so anyone in LA, south bay, west LA would probably be amenable to coming to my house.
Thanks,
SC

Her house is really big so the lady gets her work on there.
We use the same person and she rotates. This is simple if you live in Los Angeles, as far as I am concerned because there is a surplus of people who do housework types of stuff and don't feel "above" it. If someone asks me to explain this, I will.
She cleans the pertinent areas, kitchen, bathroom, vacuums, dusts.
I don't clean up anything but then again, I am a pretty clean person. My mom also.
I stay here while she does it. My mom leaves her there and runs random errands sometimes. Basically, because it's not a maid service, she has been with us for a while, we feel that she can be trusted.
She comes once a month to each of us. We just stagger the weekends she does this.
Is there anyone in your neighborhood who uses a person that they can refer you to? I say this because the woman started at my mom's then my aunt was like "heeey" and she went there and then I was like "uh-uhm" and she was here. Word of mouth works well here.
Good luck.

I know a soror that is a professional organizer. She can help with the closets.

Thanks Soror but somehow I don't think that the soror wants to actually straighten my closet (put shoes on shoe racks, iron and put laundered clothes on hangars, fold clothes and put into drawers), etc. - which is what I would like someone to do. Yes, I've basically given up on all that. I'm tired.
Do you know any good housekeepers?

I have decided to do it. I can't keep up and the guilt of not keeping my brand new home God has blessed me with, in tip top shape is driving me crazy. Biblicaly I feel like as a woman I am responsible for keeping my house up. I barely get to the grocery store. Maybe if I spent less time on greekchat I would get more done.

Even the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31:10-31 had maidens to help with the household.

I actually used that scripture as a basis for having a maid!
