I love dogs. They're your buddies, your friends. They are pack animals, and they are joining your pack. Dogs are team players. I especially adore Cairn and West Highland Terriers, herding dogs, and retrievers.

ETA I find cats selfish and annoying.
I prefer Dogs. Dogs Rules!

I have to say, I think it's kind of gross that you can't wash cats with good old soap and water. I'm not convinced that their licking themselves with their own saliva really gets them clean.

I agree with most of what Munchkin03 wrote, with the exception if its a small dog and that they are taken care of properly every single day. My mom has a Cairn Terrier and my sister has 2 miniature Dachshunds. These dogs have plenty of space. Then there is women in my building who has a Great Dane, who is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known, but I think that she is insane. You can just tell by the way that this well mannered dog walks, that he needs to be able to occasionally run, and do so in a large field.

I would own a dog, except that I can't take care of one on a daily basis because I live alone.

We wash our cats in our utility sink with shampoo about once every other month to get rid of their dander and make sure they smell good. Maybe we're just weird, though

You can wash a cat... but the cat is not likely to be too happy with you about it!

It's recommended that you bathe your cat if the cat can't produce enough saliva (possibly due to illness) or if someone in your household is allergic to cats (to keep the dander down).

After petsitting for my summer roommates' dogs for just 1 week, I am DEFINITELY a confirmed cat person. The roommate's dogs were just too darn high maintenance. I work all day long and they couldn't handle being alone. Even though they have a dog door and the weather was nice, they would still sh** all over the floor. Plus, they tore up the couch little by little. By the end of the week, there was barely any stuffing on one side of it.

For everyone who says "cats are too snotty and independent" - that depends on the cat. Just like some dogs are mean and aggressive, some cats are standoffish too. My cat George is super-friendly. He's a big cuddly tomcat and greets me at the door when I come home. He sleeps next to me. He sits on my lap when I watch TV. He follows me around my apt. I've had him since he was a kitten and have always given him a lot of attention. Pets are like children - they act how you raise them.

RE: litter box - it smells only if you are lazy. I buy the expensive litter and throw away the clumps every day. Now they make flushable litter so you can get rid of it instantly. Also, if you clean it every day, then they're not walking around in dirty litter. I also have an old rug by the box so any loose litter gets knocked off his feet.

George keeps himself very clean and he does not smell! Many breeds of dogs smell, even when they are "clean." George also is an inside cat so he doesn't get outside to get dirty.

I don't mean to come across as a dog hater. I like most dogs, and just love some of the ones my friends have. I actually wouldn't mind having a little chinese pug (they are so cute - my friend has two and they are the nicest little dogs) But since I live in an apt and will be working full time, it is completely unfair to have a dog.

I like both but right now with my living situation a cat was a better fit. Whenever, I get a house then I will get a dog as well.

I will always be a dog person. I had a big dog (chow/shepherd mix) as a child that was my protector. He would have ripped apart someone if they would have tried to hurt me. I have a soft spot in my heart for big dogs. My parents will soon be getting a pug, so a small dog will be quite a change of pace!

I'm not too fond of cats. They are nice and all sometimes but dogs are so much more sociable and always brighten up my day. Speaking of which, that series Cell Dogs on Animal Planet is really neat!

I am currently listening to a dog bark it's head off wishing I worked in a cat only practice.

I definitely prefer cats-they are much quieter and are not likely to kill you

Cats are my favorite although I do like dogs. As someone else pointed out Cats were worshipped in Ancient Egypt as gods, I've never heard of dogs being worshipped as gods.

My cats play fetch with me, they greet me at the door (my parents know when I get home because the cats go to the door and wait for me), they cuddle up when I'm down but if I don't want to be bothered they are independent from me, cats are just the best.

I do like dogs though. My preference is for big dogs. I grew up with a German Shepherd and a couple years ago we rescued a dalmatian. I just can't stand the little yip-yip dogs - they drive me nuts. My neighbors across the street have pomeranians - it is funny to see them barking. They run up to someone and start to bark but with every bark they jump back a little almost like their bark is pushing them backwards. When they get to far away they run up again and start the process over.
