I was truly not going to touch this topic; but, I was reflecting last night about being a parent (of which I am of two). I was thinking of how I've utilized my paid leave over the last year. I'm given 15 days of paid leave to use however I wish. I don't know about you guys; however, all of the companies I've worked for give what's called 'paid leave or personal days' to be utilized however you wish.
I've utilized each and every day on my children for trips to the doctor, teacher's conferences, etc. I can't tell you how much I wish that my 'paid leave' is used for ME or to spend true 'quality time' with my kids. For example, when they have a field trip, I'd love to use my 'paid leave' to chaperone and go with them.
I can understand your pain if you have to do work for someone else; yet, at the same time, if that person is using 'paid leave'-that's what it's there for. I've had to sit in or support for others out of the office for whatever their utilizing their 'paid leave' for.
To answer the original question, I'd say it's not a form of discrimination if the person is using time that's been alloted to them as 'paid leave'. When I take 'paid leave', I expect for the office to continue to be able to function without me.
In regards to the Family Leave act that I think Bill Clinton put in place, I don't find it discriminatory either because it's for the sake of 'family members' of which we all have. It doesn't have to be for people with children only.
