do you have an alums that are interior designers? they could be a wonderful source for furniture or at least ideas & suggestions.
as others have said, go for quality not quantity because the peices will hold up better in the long run.

If you don't have an alum who is a designer, ask if any of them know someone who is! Connections rock!

Ditto on the quality on the furniture. Classic quality stuff will hold up better, and look good regardless of how you decorate around them. It's a lot easier to change paint colors and accessories than the furniture.

(of course, I'm not necessarily taking my own advice right now, as we are preparing to purchase some TV room tables rather inexpensively this weekend as a short-term solution at the sorority house. As long as they last 2-3 years we'll be happy!)

To buy our chapter house furniture (plus other things...such as paying off the mortgage to our house) our chapter alumnae had a capital campaign to raise the money.

Andrea, do you know what they did for the capital campaign? I'd be interested in learning more.

Jeez, I'm a dingaling. S - if you read this - I have a chapter sis who has her own design business (I think she's been doing mainly commercial stuff lately). If you want me to ask her if she can get things at a reduced price, let me know.

hey- i tried to PM you but it wouldn't let me- anyway- this might be a stupid question- but what is a capital campaign and how did they raise money for it? my house has been having a similar issue with furniture and this might be soemthing we could do b/c our alumni are very involved- we already started a donation thing where a lot of companies donated to us- it was like- paint- toilets- bathroom marble/showers etc.... all kinds of crazy things (the alumni website is www.nusigmachi.com they have the donator info on there) but we don't have the manpower to actually put a lot of things in b/c we didn't get money to hire anyone (we got alumni and families involved and we did a lot- but we can't do the big stuff like the bathtubs) and we don't really have money to get dining room tables- an island for the kitchen- chairs (we currently are usuing metal folding chairs- its so tacky !) and couches that are old and sagging (we got covers- but we j ust need some new ones) tables and lamps that aren't from the 80's! we need bedroom furniture like desks and bookcases and beds... but i guess that can wait... anyway... enough babbling- but i'd definately like to know how your alumni raised money- thanks!!!

I agree with DGMarie. My sister's IKEA bookcase broke after two years.

Furniture is really expensive so shop wisely.
