LSU starts to crack down on greeks

apparently, dg is under hazing investigations too. they haven't gotten too specific about this yet, but i was REALLY surprised. i've never heard of hazing going around in the sororities here at lsu!

lsu is definitely cracking down on greek violations. SAE was kicked off several years ago in a nationally publicized case, delta chi got kicked off last year, and DKE was suspended for 2 years...but i think that was by their national hq and not the school...a lot of groups are on "probation", but that's really just a warning and not anything major. of course, it's not good...but the groups are really trying to get their stuff together.

Hello! Things are not as bleak as they seem. The LXs are on probation. They can't have alcohol in their house till 2005. To my son and many others, this is a reasonable punishment. I am PLEASED they made this decision. There are probably other social restrictions on them as well, but nothing that will keep them from functioning. AS FAR AS I KNOW!
At least, that's to THIS point in time. If anything more is discovered, who knows.
When I read the violations, most were so childish. A few-like having the pledges do their homework or alcohol in the house-bothered me more than drinking syrup. However, someone could vomit their socks off drinking syrup.

My son is more than pleased with his association. I am under the impression that the hazing did not involve the entire fraternity. Though he is "quiet" about some of the happenings, he was not hazed to the degree the article implies. Nothing short of expulsion could keep him from initiation. He loves LXA and looks forward to the day he will be able to call each young man his brother.

DG- I spoke to my daughter. It is not my place to say what all is involved however, SOME of the "hazing" SHE is aware of stems from a NI who was upset because they "made" them dress up when they wore their pledge pin-forced them to cross their legs when seated on the balcony-said they turned off the air conditioner (the actives were in the room too and the air just couldn't get it cooled) she also said this person complained they used UV lights on her. This one has her stumped. Her final comment was humorous...and unprintable! I'm sure Ames knows more than I do. Mine may not know everything since she
has so many outside activity.

Other Fraternities and sororities-yep lots of investigations going on. KA is in the limelight too. THEIR hazing incident is not public knowledge yet, so I will not discuss the allegation.

This is all on the heels of the Acacia and SN (non-fraternity function related) deaths. Plus the young man's, who was not, death. LSU would be derelict if they didn't show some action towards the student body in general and more specifically the Greeks.

My personal opinion is-They ALL better get their act together and realize that all it takes is one accident, one disgruntled member,
one too many reports and they are history...

It sounds like a school trying to make the whole system better -- as some have written above.

If the chapters involved take this seriously, this could be the best thing that could happen to them.

Tom and LXA: No reason to beat yourselves up over this. "Stuff Happens."

JAM, I'm sure, will keep us informed on the PROGRESS that the chapter is making!

This could turn into something really positive for the Greek System.

JAM, it was really good to hear from you on this issue! I'm glad to see that the school is actually doing something about this - there's so many schools in Wisconsin where completely blatant hazing goes on and the school just looks the other way.

very good to hear from you, JAM, and i agree with you that things here are not "bleak" for any of the fraternities and sororities!

LXA and DG, as well as KA, are all VERY strong chapters with lots of very outstanding members. in fact, a DG was just made homecoming queen! i've heard rumors about stuff that may or may not go in in KA Order, but even they have great reputations on campus. the "violations" and subsequent probations are really not as major as they might seem...it's just true that LSU is trying to make sure our greek life system is the cream of the crop

As you well know from our discussions out side of GC, We all think alike and do care and worry.

I hope we personafy what Greek Life Truely should and can be!

But yet, when you get a bunch of oldsters together, I guess they dont think that we know anything!

LXA at LSU, Upsilon Chapter in case no one has seen it has been sanctioned. They are placed on probation but not strictest probation.

Sometimes it is hard when so many Fraternitys/Soroitys are in Problems a a certain school that one would think, that they would not do a Stupid act such as this.

This puts us all, Alums of the International, Actives of The Chapter, Alums and Memebers of the Fraternity, The School, Members of All Greek Organizations, and everyone who is interested in bashing Greeks in a below total Animal House average of College students. Oh, let alone wht parents read and go WHAT, I am spending my money for this crap!

What is Sad, is that this comes on the heels of winning the Highest Award that the Un. has for a Greek Organization!
