[B]I personally think this is the most ASINEINE thing any Phi Sig could do another sister!

Who gives any one chapter the right to not let an initiated sister into their meeting? It doesn't matter if she's from that chapter or not, she should be allowed in, without any questions. I can guarantee that when we were founding the Iota Gamma chapter, we never would have done something so utterly DISRESPECTFUL!!!

It's not disrespectful, as an advisor it is NICE to know who is coming. I think the alum that just 'show up' ARE being disrespectful to the active chapter. That's just what I think. I guess it also depends on the chapter & campus.

as an alum and now an advisor, i understand that the alum should inform the chapter that they will come to the meetings.

but i still have a problem with voting the alum in. in my eyes, it's VERY disrespectful.

My chapter lets in anyone who comes, I've been to plenty of meetings as an alum. I agree with Beth, I just don't think it's THAT big of a deal. They took the time to come and be with the chapter and see what's going on.

I'm officially an alum and it kinda sucks. I feel like a senior citizen. I have to call b4 I show up to events and other alumi seem to just fall off the face of the earth b/c they are so caught up with their lives. and I want to join an alumi association, but I don't think that It will be the same... I just don't know what to do. I don't want to fall out of touch with my chapter ( if i can still call it that). I know my Chpter sisters would never tell me that I'm not wanted but, i somehow feel like i don't belong anymore... I'm tryin to find my niche but I don't know where to look..Somebody help...

Hey KC,

My suggestion is to get involved with an Alumnae Chapter in your area. If there isn't one that is too close by then do like we're doing here in Los Angeles. We have started the Southern Los Angeles County Alumnae Group and have just petitioned for an Alumnae Chapter charter.

Also, I know sometimes it sucks being the one to do have to do this but call those fellow alum who are caught up in their lives and try to schedule a get together. They will probably appreciate that someone is going that. I know for myself and PhiSigScooby the past year has been tough because of working on our thesis and life in general getting in the way. We'd both say we need to call such and such but get so busy we'd forget. Luckily for us they would call us and say hey "we miss you, let's get together" and we would jump at the chance to see everyone. So you definitely make the call and see if you can get everyone together soon.

Hope this helps you some,

Carolyn

There was something on Mentoring in the last couple of months about voting alum in. It's definitely in writing that alum are supposed to be voted in to meetings but they are also allowed voice. Voting them in or not - either way no big deal to me.

Now I definitely think alum shouldn't be allowed to show up without notifying the chapter within a reasonable amount of time. This will allow the chapter to make any necessary preparations, or to even tell the alum maybe it isn't a good time depending on what's happening (ie, elections, fireside, etc) and would it be possible for the sister to come to another meeting.

The other thing is if an alum does attend a meeting (or other event) they should be there for the whole meeting!!!! They shouldn't show up for a short amount of time then bail when they've done what they need to do. Something like this happened where we had about 8 alum come to a meeting - they stuck around for the portion they were interested in at the beginning of the meeting then asked to be excused from the rest. There was a party going on that they wanted to go to. Now imagine in a small chapter of less then 35 sisters what happens when 8 people just up and leave a ritual. It kind of felt disrepectful to me.
