pardon me for butting in, ladies.

Amanda, the reason some sororities do not want prospective AIs to approach alum chapters directly is because not all alum chapters are equally informed about AI. They may get confused and think you are ALREADY an initiated ADPi who is wanting to join the alumnae chapter and become an active alum.

One of my favorite memories as a delta member was at a chapter initiation where we had an AI. It was a chapter member's mother. This AI was invited to join bc her daughter and sister were both ADPis and she had devoted so much to our chapter that she just had to be an ADPi!!! I remember when we asked her to join, she cried. It was at the dedication of our chapter suite at Baylor and there were some IOs there from Texas and it was very special for everyone. What is also way cool is last year a legacy's mom came to initiation and participated. Anyway, just my thoughts!! Wasn't the governor of Georgia's wife an AI or something, like her two daughters were ADPis???? Or is that some weird story I heard? Oh and hey, yah hoo for me, I just joined an alum association in my hometown. I have to stay involved!! I can't wait to get started!!!

Oh, I am such a geek! I actually got tears in my eyes, thinking how absolutely beautiful it would be, having your mama AND International Officers at Initiation!! I had looked into AI for my mother, but she only took one college course. She married my daddy very young, and helped him start his business, so there wasn't time for her to go to college. But she IS getting a much deserved Mother's Pin!!

Honey, sorry!! THe IOs were at the dedication of our suite when we asked the AI to join, which was a seperate event from initiation!! and then a mom came to her daughter's initiation later that year. So we had a mom get initiated and another there for her daughter's. It was pretty groovy. My bad, I'm kinda confusing sometimes!!!

adpiucf, maybe you can answer this question for me. How come there is an age limit? I mean shouldn't we consider women who have obtained a four year college degree, who wanted to become involved in Greek Life but unfortunately their campus either had no Greek Life or the Greek Life wasn't what they wanted. I hope I am making sense in this question.

Hi Brianna,

The age limit has been set by the Alumnae Directors and Grand Council, and as the program continues to evolve and grow, with member feedback, anything is possible. Remember, AI is still very new for ADPi and NPC.

Personally, I am of the opinion that that age restriction is set to clearly define parameters between alumnae life and collegiate life. A woman at age 23 might be interested in sorority life, but she is considering the opportunity of what might be afforded at the collegiate level. Giving a few years between the age of a typical undergraduate degree recipient (22/23) and 25 or so allows that prospect a few years in the working world, maturity, a new perspective, etc. Collegiate involvement and alumnae involvement, although the same organization, are different in terms of time committment and activity. We want to make sure that a woman's reasons for interest in AI are genuinely to participate and conduct herself as an alumnae member. And the great thing about being 23 is that you will get older.

And in the meantime, get involved in your community, volunteer, pick a new hobby, excel at your job. You never know when you might meet an ADPi.

I think if the woman could really be an asset to our sorority, she would be considered. Grand Council might need to vote on it, but it's worth a try.

We had a legacy's mother participate in her initiation last year-it made me wish my mom were an ADPi! I actually hope someday that my mom will want to be an AI-she meets all the requirements, and hey, she helps RMH with all the can tabs she is collecting for me. She also recently found out that one of her good friends is an ADPi. We'll see....One of last year's grad's mom is supposed to be an AI-I don't know if we're initiating her sometime or if an alum association is doing it. I guess we'll see later this month!

That's so sweet!!! I believe we had 3 ADPi legacies this past fall and their mothers came for their initation!

Truly! I know that several ADPi housemothers have been initiated, and I'm sure that not all of them fit the AI qualifications normally used.

NPC/ADPi Alumnae Initiation is sure to grow in terms of scope and criteria over the years, as more and more non-affiliated women become interested AND as we educate our fellow sisters on the program, too!

And the best part about ADPi is that although we may be the "First," we're also smart enough to know that what worked 100 years ago, 50 years ago, or even 10 years ago isn't always ironclad. We are always looking at our sorority objectively and putting together plans for the Future of ADPi! Your ideas and recommendations ARE heard-- so keep them coming! As a sister, each one of us has the power to bring about change.

When i was initiated, we had two our chapter founders present. They were never ADPi, as we started out as Phoreffs. The eldest had been AI in 1996. And her sister, was being AI with my Alpha Class in 1998. The eldest acted as her sponser during AI. It was awesome!! It was great to be apart of such an important event for those ladies and our chapter history.

I am thinking about sending my mom for AI.
