I would also like to apologize for anyone that i offended in this, i know that this is a very touchy subject, all im asking for is some help or some leads, please dont be offended by anything i say. What i meant by the older adults statement was back then more people were hazed whether we want to believe it or not. Its not about being stupid or ignorant its just a fact. Now adays hazing is considered illegial and there are very few chapters that still do it. So that is the only reason that i was targeting the older adults on the board. Once again im sorry if i offended you, 33girl i really did not mean too.

I was under the impression that these types of studies (done by psych majors) should keep the subjects anonymous (if they so happen to choose so). I'm almost positive that the UMW psych majors have to sign some sort of clause which states that they will do so, or be expelled from the program.

I don't know if all the programs are like that though?

Hazing?

As president of my pledge class in the fall of '54, we had just seen the last of the WWII vets and were receiving a lot of Korean
war vets. Try, just dare, try to haze those boys..I was a green 18
year old Kansan amongst those old timers, and believe you me
we did not haze. Those chapters on campus who did generally
had a poor gpa and poor retention.
Naw, even 'way back then there were several chapters who did
not physically haze. Learning the Greek alphabet, doing pledge
duties, getting ornamental paddles signed...were not cosidered
hazing. How would you like to even TRY to haze an returned marine, 6'4 just back from Heartbreak Ridge? HA...In fact, I think there is likely more hazing today than back in the 50s.
And we took great pride in our table manners, social graces...
There have been a few PhD dissertations on fraternity life, get
ahold of the NIC headquarters, they have a lot of info for you.
Good luck, anyway, we all welcome scholarly activity.

Just wanted to let you know that I pledged in 1976. I am 45 and I can tell you that I WAS NOT hazed, nor do I know of anyone else on my campus that was (sorority or fraternity). I can also tell you that I have many friends that were Greek on several other campuses and they were not hazed either.

I think I would pick another topic!!

I'd go out on a limb and say there was more hazing back "then" than "nowadays"..At least as far as what you would consider hazing i guess? It was "ok" to haze or atleast it wasnt illegal until fairly recently i beleive. I can understand everyone getting offended I guess though..Although im not real sure why everyone is going crazy on the subject..

and to whoever said very few chapters still haze..i think that would be a crazy statement. I know of a few around where i go to a school and that is within a 80 mile radius probably..maybe its different around here.
EDIT*******
let me re-phrase the hazing statement...
maybe i should say..there are still alotta chapters that would make you do things that you would otherwise never do? I duno thats just my opnion

OK, I just want to stand up for my sister and say that not everything people post on GC has to be looked at suspicously or as if it were posted by an imposter. For all any of us know, none of us actually belong to the org. we claim. I don't see anything wrong with someone asking questions...it's not like she's out to shut a chapter down.

As for the age thing, it is true that hazing in Greek organizations was much more prevalent 20 years ago than it is today. No one can really argue with that. Should they have hazed their new members? Definately not. Are they bad people? Not at all.

To make all of this easy, if you have something to say that would help her, do it anonymously. If not, there's no need to flame her for asking a simple question. She's been around her for awhile, and I for one doubt that she would do anything to hurt any org.

Just my $.02!

why? are you saying that no one has ever been hazed? my aunt pledged an npc org in the early 70s....her chapter is still on her campus....and she WAS hazed!!! if hazing did not exist, then why are people dying? why are there law suits? HELLLOOO, hazing went on on my college campus while i was there!!! one of the fraternities was booted by their national office because they FILMED their hazing activities.

I was in college in the late 70s/early 80s and a friend of mine depledged from his fraternity because he didn't like the hazing. This chapter was closed several years later for hazing. My husband (same approximate time, same university, different house) said he was definitely hazed but thought it was a "bonding experience". He wasn't negatively affected.
