Just to add a historical perspective, in 1886, Delta Tau Delta "merged" with the Rainbow Fraternity -- a small group of chapters mainly in the South. The smaller fraternity gained support of the larger group, and Delt got several chapters in a geographical area where we were weak at the time.
As a tribute to the former fraternity, our national magazine is still called The Rainbow, and most of their ritual is used as a non secret ceremony during the days immediately prior to initiation by many of our chapters. It is called The Rite of Iris.
For several years, the new Delts could wear both badges, I believe chained together like a badge and chapter or officer guard might be today.

The last big merger I am aware of, I of Phi Sigma Epsilon and Phi Sigma Kappa. That happened in 1985, two years before I became a member. On a side note, there were several former Phi Sigma Epsilon chapters that did not merge and started Phi Sigma Phi.

Have you heard anything out of the group that went PSP ?
LXA / TKN merger, 1939, there was one chapter (not because they wanted to ) go local and went into TX!
Answer is on LXA daily facts !

Alpha Gamma Delta also merged with at least one other group, I think the difference was we were an NPC group and the other was a non-NPC group or local with several chapters, I think that is why Alpha Gamma Delta was kept and the other group gave up there name. Single local chapters though become members of NPC groups all the time, that is one of the ways to affiliate.

My chapter had a similar experience as shadokat's. My chapter had about 40 sisters with campus total at 85. A new sorority started with about 20 members. The campus would not recognize another sorority. I wasn't there so I don't know the specific details. All I know is that they are recognized as a pledge class. Most pledge classes go from alpha to omega, but this is the name of the local sorority pledge class. I hope that this helps.

I actually talked to our Executive VP, Tom Recker, about PSP. Struggling group in ways, not any where close to being large. Pretty good group, wrote their own ritual that doesn't use stuff from PSE, from what I've heard a good group.

I've heard our PSU chapter is pretty strong. nice house, but, it's far from campus, which has gotten us the nickname Phar Sigma Kappa over there. I'd love to go there just to meet some guys and see what they're all about at main.

Phi Pi Phi Fraternity merged with Alpha Sigma Phi in 1939; all members of active Phi Pi Phi chapters became Alpha Sigs. Those members who belonged to defunct chapters could become initiated as members-at-large of Alpha Sigma Phi.
Alpha Kappa Pi consolidated with Alpha Sigma Phi in 1946; the pledge pin and portions of ther pledging ceremony are based on the ritual of Alpha Kappa Pi. The AKPi badge became the 'sister pin' of the fraternity by replacing AKPi with ASPhi.
In 1965, some chapters of Alpha Gamma Upsilon Fraternity merged with Alpha Sigma Phi. The remaining chapters of AGU that did not merge with Alpha Sig merged with another fraternity.

Actually PSK 480 is probably talking about Penn State University, where we have a chapter, and Tom is speaking about Pittsburgh State University in Kansas! Two different PSUs about 1500 miles apart! The chapter at Pittsburgh State was originally the Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Epsilon (founded at Emporia). I know they have been struggling since re-colonizing a few years ago. I actually used to be friends with old advisor at PSU (Kansas) a few years ago (Michelle), and she used to call me for advice about the colony.

This is so interesting! Do I remember hearing something about Alpha Sigma Alpha merging? Or was it that ASA used to be non NPC, so you could be ASA and in an NPC, and when ASA joined NPC you had to pick?
I used to be fraternity heritage chair and i LOOOVE learnign about these things!
Also I believe ZBT and some other group merged maybe in the 1960s?
