Even though I think the clothes aspect of tax-free week(end) is kinda dorky, I think it's a good idea if the state also has tax free computers and related electronics. With a $1,500 system, you can save a lot of money, enough to buy a nice printer. I know I'd like my $168.50 back in taxes!

If you live in Texas, the idea may sound silly.. Your retailers are making a killing though, especially in border towns. This weekend, there was a mass migration of Oklahoma cheap asses to north Texas. It was so bad that we received memos from corporate on how to explain why we weren't voluntarily reducing our prices to make up for the lack of taxes (the clothing stores at the malls do this to try to keep the $ at home).

People get stupid thrills out of what they think is beating the system.

Ktsnake? What are you talking about, Norman had tax free weekend, the 1st through the 3rd, and people are starting to come back to OU to move into apartments and report back to their greek houses to get ready for rush.

It was nuts.

Completely nuts.

That poor girl! I work at grown-up Limited and whenever I think our store is going to suck to close because it was so busy, I just look over there (stores are connected) and realize things aren't so bad.

This state had it right when they decided to no clothing sales tax.
Jersey's tax isn't tooo bad when your in an Urban Enterprise Zone (which I think if about 1/2 the state now, everywhere you turn, its there) its ony 3%
Rest of the state 6%.
Doesn't Jersey also have some weird tax for shoes? Like no tax on certain ones? I bought 3 pairs of shoes last summer at Nordstrom's and was all excited at how low the tax was!

Tax Free Weekend was nuts. I like it because the retailers add some really good deals to the bargain. But I can't stand crowds. The women's shops I went into weren't too bad. But I had promised my little girl a new outfit. I couldn't even get into The Children's Place or any other children's shop. I had to buy her a candied apple to make it up to her, and she was wired all day.
And Kitso, I absolutely refused to go near an Old Navy, even though they thoughtfully sent me an email to remind me about tax free weekend .

But I totally agree with everyone else. For the amount of hassle, its not worth it. Kinda reminds me of how Christmas is- all croweded and everyone all pushy to get what they need. No thanks, I'll pass.
I could've choked the Mayor myself for not only reinstating sales tax, but increase it from 8.25 to 8.625.

Supposedly, we have two upcoming tax-free weeks - right before the school year begins (when lots of folks will shop), and during MLK week (right after XMAS, when folks are still recupperating from holiday shopping and therefore broke as hell).

My fiance and I always preferred shopping in Jersey anyways, so I guess we'll continue with tradition.
