The actual sport of Rugby was derived from a soccer game, when the Rugby school in England insisted on using their hands. They broke off from what would eventually become the FA, and started their own sport.
This according to the recently deceased World Cup referee and one of the speakers at his self named youth referee camp, Ken Aston.
