I would not get any exotic type of animal like sugar gliders, iguanas, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils unless you research how to take care of them-I see so many sick exotics b/c they are on the wrong diet (like the lettuce diet-HELLO lettuce is not a nutrional meal). Ferrets are cancer factories unfortunately.

Oh cool, that's what I have! Are they the same sex? Remember that they do get fairly large though (not enormous or anything) so if you have several of them you'll need a large tank for them

How about getting a salt water aquarium? They look really cool, can be a hobby and don't make any noise. Though they aren't really cheap as far as getting them how you want them, they can be a good hobby. I've had a salt water aquarium now for 3 yrs. It's a 155 gallon aquarium. I didn't start off with everything either. First I bought the aquarium, crushed coral/coquina and the stuff to clean the thing. It's huge. Eventually I got a lot of live coral, exotic fish, two small Moray eels, ameboeas, star fish and most recently a tiny lobster. It's addictive. Salty Aquariums are a lot to maintain, but their satisfaction is more of a pay off. I have someone to come and clean mine. I don't have the time to clean it myself. I think they look really cool. Have you ever been to something like a walk through aquarium? Some place that actually makes you feel as though you're in the ocean when peering into it? Thats the feeling I get everytime I look into mine. I also use High voltage lighting inorder to give the water that mid-day tropical sun look, kind of like the way the water looks at noon time in places like the Carribean. At night I have black lights that make the whole aquarium look as though it's glowing. It's really cool when you are having a party.
It's just a suggestion. If you're interested in them, look through your telefon book and search for aquariums. Go to the shop and see what I'm talking about. You might find it very fascinating.

How about a chinchilla? I recently visited some friends of mine who have one (who is adorable ) and I'm toying with the idea of getting one myself. They stay in a cage, but you can take them out to cuddle them and let them run around if you want. You don't need to wash them - they take dust baths. They are also non-allergenic - my husband is highly allergic to cats and dogs, but didn't react at all to the chinchilla.

I duno what sex they are! The guy didn't tell me. Is there a way to know? I just named one George cuz he's kinda curious looking, and one is Bob cuz he swims like a schizophrenic... like What about Bob.
We've had a salt water tank. It was huge, but I can't remember how big. It was a huge pain in the ass too. My mom, like once a month, had to connect some sort of hose from the tank to the sink to do a monthly cleaning. Not my idea of fun.
The only thing I'm worried about with the turtles is that I heard they carry salmonella... and I've had a bacterial infection before and it was the worst thing ever so I get freaked out about that.

The easiest way to determine sex is to look at their red markings (the "ears"). Males have more prominent red markings there, while females have barely visible markings. Mine is a male named Snoopy
As for the salmonella, yes it can be an issue but if you always wash your hands thoroughly after handling the turtles, then you should never have a problem!

my roommate has a ferret
they stink like crazy
plus they don't like to be caged all of the time
and chinchilla likes to sleep during the day
and play all night long
plus, you can't put them near water or they'll die
why don't you try the electronic pets that are on a key chain

Near water? I know you can't put them in water because their fur gets so waterlogged and heavy that they can't move - hence the dust baths. But they have to have water to drink... (from a bottle obviously)
I wonder what happens to a chinchilla caught outside in a rain storm...

I had a pet rat. She was lab rat from a psychology course I took. I adopted after the semester (because Iif I didn't they were going to feed her to the birds of prey). She was so sweet, and lots of fun to play with.
They don't smell. They only problem is that they are nocturnal. So she made one hell of a racket when I was trying to sleep. But I eventually got used to hit, so it didn't bother me anymore.
They make great pets. I would get another.
